Chapter 8

My mother came to the hospital alone.
Security called first.
Ethan said no.
I said yes.
Not because I wanted comfort.
Because I wanted to see which mother walked in.
The one who tucked blankets around me when I was sick.
Or the one who stole my husband’s phone while I was on the floor.
She entered wearing the lavender cardigan from the night before.
I hated that.
It still looked soft.
She stood near the foot of the bed and cried.
“Hannah.”
I waited.
“I was scared.”
I said nothing.
“Claire could go to jail.”
There it was.
Not I am sorry.
Not are you okay.
Claire could go to jail.
I looked at Ethan.
He stood by the window, arms crossed, jaw tight.
I turned back to my mother.
“And I could have lost my baby.”
She flinched.
Finally.
A little.
Then she whispered, “But you didn’t.”
Something inside me went quiet.
Not broken.
Finished.
“No.”
“Not because of you.”
Her eyes filled again.
“I was trying to keep the family together.”
I looked at the monitor beside me.
The baby’s heartbeat moved steadily across the screen.
“You tried to keep Claire safe from what she did.”
“That is not the same thing.”
My mother’s face hardened slightly.
“You have always judged her.”
“I have always survived her.”
That sentence landed between us.
She did not deny it.
Maybe she could not.
I reached for the bedside table and picked up Rosemary’s note.
Do not sign anything your father brings after I am gone.
I held it out.
“Grandma knew.”
My mother stared at the handwriting.
Her face changed.
Shame.
Then fear.
“What else did she leave you?”
I almost laughed.
Even then.
Even at my hospital bed.
Still not asking what I needed.
Only what evidence existed.
I pulled the note back.
“Enough.”
Security escorted her out two minutes later because Ethan asked her to leave and she refused.
As the door closed, she said, “You’re choosing him over us?”
I placed a hand on my belly.
“No.”
May you like
“I’m choosing my child over the family that chose Claire over mine.”
