PART 2

Walter Vale had not worn the gatekeeper uniform by accident.

He had chosen it.

The navy jacket was old but clean.

The brass buttons were real.

The cap had belonged to Franklin Moss, the first gatekeeper Valehurst ever hired when Walter’s father bought the land in 1968.

Walter kept the uniform in a cedar closet near his study.

Most people thought it was sentimental.

It was.

But not only that.

Every few years, Walter put it on and stood at the gate.

Not for publicity.

Not for nostalgia.

For truth.

People behaved differently at gates.

At front doors.

At service entrances.

At counters where they thought no one important was listening.

Walter had learned more about people while wearing plain clothing than he ever had while sitting at the head of a boardroom table.

That morning, he had been waiting for Celeste.

Adrian’s fiancée.

The woman everyone in the society pages called elegant, charitable, polished, and perfect for the Vale family.

Walter did not trust perfection.

He trusted small moments.

He trusted how people spoke to waiters after spilling wine.

How they treated drivers when traffic made them late.

How they looked at staff when no camera was present.

Adrian loved Celeste.

Or thought he did.

Walter loved Adrian enough to test what love had made him blind to.

The board of the Vale Foundation was meeting that afternoon to consider Celeste’s proposal to become public ambassador for the Valehurst Preservation Trust.

The role came with influence.

Money.

Access.

A seat beside Adrian at every major estate function.

Celeste wanted it badly.

Walter had read her proposal.

Beautiful words.

Community.

Legacy.

Service.

Dignity.

He wanted to know if she understood any of them.

So he dressed as the gatekeeper and stood outside his own estate.

At first, Celeste ignored him.

Then she became irritated because he asked to verify her invitation.

Then offended because he requested her driver move the white car away from the emergency lane.

Then furious because he said the rules applied to everyone.

That was when she took a glass of water from the car console.

Adrian reached for her arm.

“Celeste, don’t.”

She pulled away.

Then she threw the water in Walter’s face.

Now, with the board walking toward them, Adrian finally understood.

Walter had not been testing the gate.

He had been testing her.

May you like

And she had failed before the doors even opened.
