PART 8
After Celeste left, Adrian expected Walter to praise him.
He did not.
Walter stood slowly, still wet, still old, still far more dangerous than anyone in the room had remembered.
“Sit down,” he said.
Adrian sat.
So did the board.
Marcus closed the door.
Walter placed the gatekeeper cap on the table.
The cap looked small there.
Worn.
Almost humble.
But everyone understood it had done more work that day than any document in the room.
Walter looked at Adrian.
“You ended the engagement after the evidence became impossible to ignore.”
Adrian swallowed.
“Yes.”
“That is not the same as wisdom.”
“No.”
Walter’s eyes softened only slightly.
“But it may be the beginning of it.”
Adrian looked down.
“I defended her.”
“Yes.”
“I made excuses.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were being harsh.”
Walter leaned back.
“I was being patient.”
That stung.
Because it was true.
Adrian had mistaken Walter’s warnings for old-fashioned judgment.
In reality, the old man had been waiting for his grandson to learn what kind of person he was willing to bring through the gate.
Walter opened another folder.
Adrian tensed.
“This is not about Celeste,” Walter said.
“It is about you.”
Inside were plans for the Valehurst Succession Trust.
Adrian’s name appeared in several places.
So did conditions.
Staff council approval.
Ethics review.
One year of direct estate operations work.
Quarterly service rotations.
Adrian frowned.
“Service rotations?”
Walter nodded.
“Gate.”
Kitchen.
Grounds.
Security.
Housekeeping.
Maintenance.
Adrian looked up.
“You want me to work staff positions?”
Walter’s voice was firm.
“If you inherit authority over people whose names you do not know, you will become another beautiful problem.”
The room was silent.
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
The security chief held his gaze without apology.
Adrian understood.
This was not punishment.
Not exactly.
It was education.
The kind wealth rarely gives unless someone wise forces it.
Walter touched the cap.
“One year.”
“No cameras.”
“No announcements.”
“No speeches.”
Adrian took a long breath.
“And if I refuse?”
Walter looked at him.
“Then you keep your trust allowance.”
“And lose the estate.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
For the first time that day, he did not argue.
“I’ll start at the gate.”
Walter studied him.
Then pushed the cap across the table.
May you like
“Tomorrow morning.”
