PART 9

The next morning, Adrian Vale stood at the estate gate in a navy uniform.

It did not fit perfectly.

Marcus refused to tailor it.

“Comfort comes after competence,” he said.

Walter watched from the mansion window with coffee in one hand and quiet amusement in his eyes.

Adrian’s first hour was miserable.

He opened the gate too slowly.

Forgot a delivery code.

Mispronounced a housekeeper’s last name.

Allowed one guest car to block the service lane until the pastry delivery almost turned around.

Marcus corrected him every time.

Not cruelly.

Precisely.

By noon, Adrian’s expensive shoes were wet from the grass.

By two, his hands were cold.

By four, he had apologized to three people he had never noticed before.

A gardener named Luis showed him where the side latch stuck.

A driver named Keisha taught him which guests pretended not to hear instructions.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Donnelly, told him the west steps iced over before the rest of the drive.

Information that actually kept people safe.

Adrian realized with shame that the estate was held together by knowledge he had spent years walking past.

That evening, Walter came to the gate.

No board.

No guests.

No test.

Just grandfather and grandson in the orange winter light.

“How was your first day?”

Adrian looked at his hands.

“Hard.”

Walter smiled faintly.

“Good.”

Adrian hesitated.

“Did you hate doing this?”

Walter looked at the gate.

“No.”

“I learned more here than in any boardroom.”

“About business?”

“About people.”

Adrian nodded.

Then said the thing he had been carrying all day.

“I’m sorry.”

Walter turned.

“For Celeste?”

“For not seeing.”

Walter watched him carefully.

An apology can be another performance if offered too quickly.

But Adrian looked tired.

Cold.

Ashamed.

Awake.

“Then keep seeing,” Walter said.

That was all.

Weeks passed.

Then months.

Adrian kept working rotations.

No announcement.

No society statement.

Celeste tried to leak a story that she had ended the engagement because the Vale family was cruel.

It lasted one news cycle.

Then an estate staff member anonymously released a short clip.

Water hitting Walter’s face.

Celeste saying, “Let me wash the filth off you.”

The public decided quickly.
