PART 4

Celeste tried to recover by laughing.

It was a small laugh.

Thin.

Incorrect.

The kind people use when reality has shifted and they need the old room back.

“Mr. Vale,” she said.

“I had no idea.”

Walter looked at her.

“That is not an apology.”

Her smile faltered.

“I was startled.”

“No.”

“You were inconvenienced.”

The board members behind the security chief stood in terrible silence.

One was Evelyn Price, the trust’s legal chair.

Another was Martin Cole, the foundation treasurer.

Both had reviewed Celeste’s application that morning.

Both had praised her polish.

Both now watched water drip from Walter Vale’s sleeve.

Celeste looked toward Adrian for rescue.

He did not move.

That frightened her more than Walter.

“Adrian,” she whispered.

He stared at the empty glass in her hand.

“You poured water on him.”

“He was acting like staff.”

Walter’s eyes sharpened.

“Staff are people.”

Celeste opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then made a worse mistake.

“I mean, I thought he was only the gatekeeper.”

The staff near the gate went still.

Walter’s face did not change.

But Adrian closed his eyes.

Only.

That word.

The tiny word that reveals entire souls.

Walter stepped closer.

His wet shoes clicked softly against the stone.

“Only the gatekeeper.”

Celeste swallowed.

“That came out wrong.”

“No.”

“It came out honestly.”

The security chief, Marcus Lane, stood beside Walter.

His expression was controlled, but his jaw was tight.

Marcus had worked at Valehurst for fifteen years.

Walter had paid for his daughter’s college after Marcus’s wife died.

Celeste had called him “door man” twice.

He had said nothing.

Walter had noticed.

Walter looked at Marcus.

“Was the emergency lane blocked?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Did Mr. Lane ask politely for the vehicle to move?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Did Miss Marrow refuse?”

“Yes, sir.”

Celeste snapped, “This is ridiculous.”

Evelyn Price finally spoke.

“Miss Marrow, you are standing in front of the board you were scheduled to address.”

Celeste turned pale.

Walter removed a folded handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his beard.

Then he looked at Adrian.

“Bring her inside.”

Celeste exhaled with relief.

Too soon.

Walter added, “Let her present her proposal exactly as planned.”

Adrian frowned.

“Grandfather?”

Walter’s eyes remained on Celeste.
