PART 5

The boardroom at Valehurst was colder than the porch.

Not in temperature.

In consequence.

Celeste sat at one end of the long walnut table, still trying to look composed.

Her cream silk outfit remained flawless.

Only her hand gave her away.

It trembled slightly each time she touched her handbag.

Walter entered last.

Not in a changed suit.

Not dry.

Not restored to billionaire costume.

He came in wearing the soaked gatekeeper uniform.

The cap was in his hand.

The room stood when he entered.

Celeste did too, half a second late.

Adrian stood near the window, arms crossed, face drawn with humiliation and disbelief.

Marcus remained by the door.

The board members opened their folders.

Celeste’s proposal sat in front of each of them.

The title page read:

The Valehurst Dignity Initiative.

Walter looked at the title.

Then at Celeste.

“Begin.”

Her throat moved.

“Perhaps we should reschedule.”

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“We have already had the demonstration.”

“Now we will hear the theory.”

Martin Cole looked down to hide his reaction.

Celeste began reading.

“At Valehurst, dignity is not inherited.”

Walter’s eyebrow lifted.

“It is practiced through service, respect, and community stewardship.”

Her voice weakened as she spoke.

Every sentence turned against her.

Respect for those who maintain the estate.

A culture of inclusion.

Elevating unheard voices.

Ensuring no one is invisible.

Adrian looked at her across the table.

He had helped edit the proposal.

He remembered believing she meant it.

Now every polished word sounded like stolen clothing.

Celeste stopped halfway down the page.

“I can explain what happened outside.”

Walter leaned back.

“I am listening.”

She looked around the table.

Then at Adrian.

Then at Walter.

“I was under pressure.”

No one spoke.

“It is an important day.”

Still silence.

“I have been trying to prove I belong here.”

Walter nodded slowly.

“So you found someone you thought belonged less.”

Celeste’s eyes filled.

That had worked on Adrian before.

It did not work on Walter.

He looked at Evelyn Price.

“Read the staff reports.”

Celeste stiffened.

“What staff reports?”

Evelyn opened a second folder.

Adrian turned sharply.

Walter’s gaze stayed fixed on Celeste.

“The gate was not your first mistake.”
