PART 4
Evelyn’s eighteenth birthday party looked perfect.
That was Cynthia’s specialty.
Perfect flowers.
Perfect cake.
Perfect photographer.
Perfect daughter in a navy dress standing beneath golden lights while people praised the family.
Richard gave a toast in the ballroom.
“My daughter is now a woman.”
Everyone clapped.
He smiled toward Evelyn.
“And with adulthood comes responsibility.”
Evelyn felt Helen’s warning move through her like cold water.
Cynthia stood beside her, one hand on Evelyn’s back, fingers pressing just enough to guide her posture.
Grant leaned near the dessert table with his friends, already joking about how rich his little sister was.
Evelyn smiled for photos.
Cut the cake.
Thanked guests.
Accepted hugs from people who would not notice if she disappeared by morning.
At 10:15 p.m., Richard led her to his study.
Cynthia followed with a folder.
Grant came too.
That surprised Evelyn.
Until it did not.
Richard closed the door.
“We have one more birthday responsibility.”
Cynthia placed the folder on the desk.
“The family management agreement.”
Evelyn looked at the pen beside it.
A gold pen.
A birthday trap with a ribbon on it.
Richard smiled.
“Just sign where marked.”
Evelyn did not sit.
“I can’t.”
Cynthia’s smile tightened.
“Evelyn.”
“I already met with Grandmother’s attorney.”
The room changed.
Grant straightened.
Richard’s eyes went flat.
“What did you say?”
“I created a protected trust.”
“The inheritance will be managed independently.”
“No withdrawals without trustee approval.”
“No family entity.”
“No borrowing against it.”
“No transfer.”
Cynthia’s face lost color.
Grant exploded first.
“You did what?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I protected it.”
Richard’s voice was quiet now.
Dangerously quiet.
“From us?”
Evelyn’s throat tightened.
“From pressure.”
Cynthia placed a hand over her heart.
“After everything we’ve done for you?”
Evelyn almost apologized.
The old reflex rose like a bruise.
Then she remembered Beatrice’s letter.
Money is not love.
Richard opened the study door.
“Go to bed.”
Evelyn blinked.
“That’s it?”
He smiled without warmth.
“We’ll discuss your trust in the morning.”

By sunrise, her bags were already packed in the foyer.
