PART 5

Richard had packed Evelyn’s bags himself.

That was the detail she could not stop staring at.

Her navy suitcase.

Her weekend duffel.

Her school backpack.

All placed neatly on the foyer rug like she was being returned to a store.

He had not packed her books.

Not her framed photo with Beatrice.

Not her college acceptance letter.

Not the old stuffed rabbit she kept in the back of her closet.

Only clothes.

Only enough to make the expulsion look practical.

Cynthia stood near the staircase, eyes red but makeup perfect.

Grant looked more awake than he usually did before noon.

That meant he had known.

Maybe they had all sat together after she went to bed.

Maybe they had decided she needed a lesson.

Maybe they thought fear would make her run back inside and beg to sign.

Richard pointed at the bags.

“Since you don’t trust this family, pack your things and leave by noon.”

Evelyn’s chest felt hollow.

“So that’s what I’m worth to you?”

Cynthia flinched.

Then chose him anyway.

“Evelyn, don’t make this harder than it already is.”

Grant stepped forward.

“You locked us out of that money on purpose.”

Evelyn looked at her brother.

He was twenty-two.

Old enough to know better.

Spoiled enough not to.

“What did you need it for?”

Grant’s face hardened.

“Don’t act superior.”

Richard snapped, “That is none of your concern.”

“It’s my inheritance.”

“It is family money.”

“No.”

Her voice steadied.

“It was Grandmother’s gift to me.”

Cynthia whispered, “She would be ashamed of you.”

That one almost broke her.

Almost.

Evelyn turned toward her mother.

“No.”

“She knew you.”

Cynthia’s face changed.

A flash of anger beneath the tears.

Richard opened the front door.

Morning light spilled over the marble.

Evelyn picked up her suitcase handle.

Her hand shook only once.

At the threshold, she looked back.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You’re an adult now.”

Grant muttered, “And rich.”

Evelyn nodded slowly.

Then she stepped outside.

The door closed behind her.

For thirty seconds, she stood on the front steps with nowhere to sleep and the clearest truth of her life.

They did not kick her out because she had money.

May you like

They kicked her out because they could not control it.
