PART 8
Richard appeared at the townhome two days later.
That meant someone had followed Helen.
Or someone had searched property records badly enough to think intimidation could still work through a trust.
Evelyn saw his car from the upstairs window.
Her heart reacted before her mind did.
Fast.
Hard.
Childlike.
Helen was downstairs reviewing documents.
She looked up when Evelyn came into the kitchen.
“He’s here.”
Helen closed the file.
“Do you want to speak with him?”
Evelyn looked at the blue front door.
A door bought by Beatrice.
A door Richard had never unlocked.
“Yes.”
Helen stood.
“Then I will stand behind you.”
Evelyn opened the door but kept the chain latched.
Richard stood on the porch in a dark coat, face tight with anger disguised as concern.
“Take the chain off.”
“No.”
His eyes flashed.
“This is ridiculous.”
“I agree.”
“You should not be living here alone.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You told me to leave.”
“I was angry.”
“You packed my bags.”
His mouth tightened.
“Families say things.”
“Families also mean things.”
Richard lowered his voice.
“You do not understand the consequences of what you did.”
“I do now.”
“You froze our plans.”
“My inheritance was not your plan.”
He stepped closer.
The chain held.
“I am your father.”
Evelyn felt fear rise.
Then Helen’s voice came from behind her.
“And I am her attorney.”
Richard looked past Evelyn.
His expression changed.
“Helen.”
“Richard.”
He forced a laugh.
“You always enjoyed interfering.”
“I prefer documenting.”
Helen lifted her phone.
“This conversation is being recorded.”
Richard’s smile vanished.
Evelyn almost smiled.
Almost.
He looked back at his daughter.
“Grant could lose everything.”
Evelyn’s voice stayed quiet.
“What was he going to lose?”
Richard did not answer.
Helen did.
“A lease deposit, franchise fee, and private gambling settlement.”
Evelyn’s head turned.
“Gambling?”
Richard snapped, “That is confidential.”
Helen looked at him coolly.
“Not if you planned to pay it with her protected assets.”
Evelyn stared at her father.
For the first time, the family emergency had a name.
Grant had gambled.
May you like
And Evelyn had been expected to save him before she even knew she was the sacrifice.
