PART 9

Grant came next.

Not with apology.

With outrage.

He arrived that evening in the blue varsity jacket he wore like proof he had once been important somewhere.

Evelyn did not open the door this time.

She spoke through the porch camera.

“What do you want?”

Grant looked up at the small lens.

“You ruined my life.”

Evelyn stood inside the living room with Helen beside her and a police non-emergency number already written on a notepad.

“I didn’t place the bets.”

Grant’s face twisted.

“You don’t know anything.”

“I know you expected my inheritance to clean it up.”

His silence answered.

Then he said, “You don’t need three million dollars.”

Evelyn laughed once.

It shocked both of them.

“You don’t get to decide what I need.”

“You’re eighteen.”

“You’d blow it anyway.”

“That was your plan.”

Grant stepped closer to the door.

“Dad said you’d help if you knew how bad it was.”

Evelyn’s voice softened despite herself.

“How bad is it?”

For one second, he looked like her brother.

Not the entitled son.

Not the angry young man.

Just Grant, scared.

Then pride returned.

“Bad enough that family should matter.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

There it was again.

Family.

The word everyone used when they wanted her to disappear into their consequences.

“Family mattered when you watched Dad throw me out.”

Grant looked away.

“I didn’t think he’d actually do it.”

“You stood there.”

“I was mad.”

“So was I.”

“But I didn’t gamble away your future.”

Grant hit the door with his palm.

Helen stepped forward and spoke clearly toward the camera.

“Grant, leave the property now.”

He stared.

“You people are insane.”

Helen lifted her phone.

“The police report will include attempted intimidation.”

Grant backed away, swearing.

Before leaving, he shouted, “Grandma would hate what you became.”

Evelyn opened the door then.

Just enough for her voice to carry.

“No.”

“She built what I became.”

Grant froze.

Evelyn looked at him through the chain.

“And that is why you can’t afford me anymore.”

He left without answering.

That night, Evelyn cried again.

Not because Grant hated her.

May you like

Because part of her still wished he had knocked to ask if she was okay.
