part 6

PART 6
Helen Ross arrived eight minutes later.
Not in a limousine.
Not in a dramatic black car.
In a practical gray sedan with a dent near the back bumper and a trunk full of legal folders.
She pulled up to the curb, rolled down the window, and looked at Evelyn standing beside her luggage.
“Well,” Helen said.
“They moved faster than I hoped.”
Evelyn tried to laugh.
It came out like a sob.
Helen got out and opened the trunk.
“Put the bags in.”
Evelyn stared.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“Did Grandmother?”
Helen’s face softened.
“Your grandmother believed in preparing for storms while the sky was still blue.”
Evelyn helped load the bags.
Her hands were numb.
The mansion behind her looked huge and distant, like a place she had only rented childhood from.
As Helen drove away, Evelyn did not look back until the gate closed.
Then she cried.
Quietly at first.
Then harder.
Helen said nothing.
She only handed her a clean handkerchief from the console.
After several minutes, Evelyn whispered, “I don’t have anywhere to go.”
“Yes, you do.”
Evelyn turned.
“What?”
Helen kept her eyes on the road.
“Your grandmother purchased a small townhome near your university.”
Evelyn stopped breathing.
“She what?”
“It is held in the same protective structure.”
“Available to you upon turning eighteen.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“She never told me.”
“She knew your parents would pressure you to sell it.”
A fresh wave of grief rose in Evelyn’s chest.
Beatrice had not only left money.
She had left a door.
A roof.
A future with a lock her parents did not own.
The townhome was twenty minutes from campus.
Brick front.
Blue door.
Small porch.
Inside, there was a bed, a desk, basic furniture, pantry staples, and a framed photo of Beatrice on the kitchen counter.
Beside the photo was another envelope.
Evelyn opened it with trembling fingers.
Home is where you can say no and still be safe.
Start here.
Evelyn sank onto the kitchen floor and cried until Helen sat beside her.
Not hugging without permission.
Just present.
