It stimulated contractions.
The bag had been changed eleven minutes earlier by a nurse using another employee’s badge.
Hospital security found the nurse uniform abandoned in a restroom.
Marian Hale appeared on camera entering the stairwell.
Nora felt betrayed again.
Marian had saved her from Vanessa’s attack.
Now she seemed to be accelerating the delivery.
Owen disagreed.
“Marian may be chasing the person who changed the IV.”
The footage did not show enough.
Dr. Warren disconnected every line and moved Nora into a secured surgical suite as a precaution.
The babies’ heart rates remained stable, but labor progressed.
A transfer could not occur safely.
The hospital had to prepare for delivery.
Vanessa stood outside the suite under police supervision.
Nora requested to speak with her.
“You wanted these children,” Nora said.
Vanessa looked through the glass.
“I wanted control of what happened to them.”
“The council has an order.”
“I know.”
“Help stop it.”
Vanessa laughed without humor.
“You trust me now?”
“No.”
“Then why ask?”
“Because you know their system.”
Vanessa revealed the council’s orders relied on a hospital privacy clause. If Nora designated an independent birth witness before delivery, the council could not remove the infants without that witness receiving the original medical records.
“Who qualifies?”
“A licensed emergency medical professional with no relationship to the trust.”
Nora looked toward Daniel.
He qualified.
Daniel hesitated.
Accepting would give him access to all three infants’ records. The council could accuse him of conflict because he might be the biological father of one.
Grace Morgan found a stronger option.
Daniel could serve jointly with Detective Collins, creating medical and law-enforcement custody of the records without parental custody of the babies.
Nora signed the designation in front of three cameras.
Vanessa watched.
“You used the signature I taught you,” she said.
Nora remembered their mother making them practice legal signatures as teenagers.
“Mother trained both of us for this.”
“She trained us to compete.”
“We chose whether to continue.”
Vanessa looked toward the floor.
The difference between them had never been who was manipulated.
It was what they did afterward.
The independent test for Fetus B arrived.
Anna Reed was the biological mother.
Owen was excluded as the father.
His original record was false.
Owen stared at the result.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel read the paternal profile.
The father carried a close familial relationship to Owen.
A brother.
Owen claimed he had no brother.
Margaret’s files said otherwise.
Owen had been born a twin at Bellmere.
The second boy disappeared from the nursery and was legally declared stillborn.
His name was Marcus Gray.
Vanessa recognized it.
Marcus served as Dr. Hawthorne’s private security chief.
He had entered Bellmere the night of Nora’s fall using the service tunnel.
Police had mistaken him for Hawthorne in one grainy camera frame.
Anna’s embryo had been created using Marcus’s DNA, not Owen’s.
Owen had been shown falsified records so he would believe the child was his and protect it.
Another manipulated guardian.
Another false father.
Daniel opened Anna’s final voice recording.
“If Marcus learns the embryo survived, he will claim it. Do not let his blood test become his permission.”
Hospital security reported a man forcing open the lower maternity entrance.
