Until the results returned, the handwritten warning remained unverified.
Still, the original report contained evidence supporting it.
Each fetus had a different mitochondrial profile.
That could not happen if all three embryos came from the same biological mother.
Nora’s triplets shared a womb and a due date.
Genetically, they might be strangers.
Vanessa refused to believe it.
“That laboratory is fraudulent,” she said from the hospital hallway.
“Then why did you try to steal the envelope?” Detective Mara Collins asked.
“I saw Nora handing private medical information to a stranger.”
“Daniel Reed is a licensed paramedic.”
“He is also emotionally connected to one of the embryo numbers.”
Vanessa already knew.
Daniel had not told her.
Someone inside the hospital had.
Mara separated Vanessa from her attorney long enough to ask how she obtained the alleged parental-rights agreement.
Vanessa claimed Nora signed it eight months earlier, before the embryo transfer.
Nora denied that.
The hospital compared the signature to older property documents. The handwriting was nearly perfect, but the ink had been printed by a mechanical signing device.
The forged agreement also contained a medical identification number that had not been assigned to Nora until after she became pregnant.
It could not have been created eight months earlier.
Vanessa changed her explanation.
“Nora asked me to prepare it in case she died.”
“Then why list yourself as the biological mother?” Mara asked.
Vanessa remained silent.
Inside the examination room, Dr. Warren studied the ultrasound.
The fall had not caused placental separation. Nora’s scraped palm and bruised shoulder were treatable.
But the pregnancy had entered a dangerous stage.
“We may need to deliver soon,” Warren said.
“Will they survive?”
“We are doing everything possible.”
Nora looked at Daniel, who had remained only because police requested a statement about the report.
“What was your wife’s name?”
“Anna.”
“Did she have red hair?”
Daniel stared.
“Yes.”
Nora reached for the bedside drawer and removed a photograph she had carried inside the envelope.
It showed a woman outside Hawthorne Reproductive Center.
Red hair.
Green coat.
The image had been taken from across a parking lot.
Daniel’s voice disappeared.
“That’s Anna.”
“The laboratory mailed it to me with the report.”
“Why?”
“There was writing on the back.”
Daniel turned the photograph over.
SHE KNEW THE CHILDREN WOULD BE MOVED THROUGH BELLMERE.
Bellmere was not merely Nora’s home.
Before it became a private mansion, the estate housed a maternity recovery center funded by the Hawthorne Foundation. Thirty years earlier, wealthy families sent pregnant women there under strict confidentiality.
The facility closed after three patients disappeared during the same winter.
Their babies were never found.
Nora and Vanessa’s mother later purchased the property and converted it into a family residence.
Dr. Warren returned with the first independent laboratory result.
Fetus A had no biological relationship to Nora, Vanessa, Owen, or Vanessa’s husband.
Fetus B also excluded them.
Fetus C carried a partial familial match to someone whose DNA already existed in the hospital system.
Daniel.
The probability indicated a first-degree paternal relationship.
Nora watched his face.
“You’re his father.”
Dr. Warren corrected her gently.
“The result suggests Daniel is the biological father of one fetus. It does not yet establish which embryo records are authentic.”
Daniel sat down.
Anna’s lost embryo had not been destroyed.
It had been implanted into another woman years later.
Vanessa began shouting outside the room.
“She cannot hear that without me present!”
Nora looked toward the door.
“Why does she already know?”
The hospital computer showed someone had accessed the test result thirteen seconds after it was entered.
The user account belonged to Dr. Adrian Hawthorne, director of the fertility clinic that had declared Daniel and Anna’s embryos destroyed.
