Chapter 9 - Owen’s Last AccountOwen Hale had died when his private plane crashed into Lake Erie.

The wreckage was recovered.

His body was not.

Nora accepted death after investigators found his wedding ring and blood inside the cockpit.

Now his encrypted account had logged into Bellmere six minutes earlier.

Mara traced the connection to a satellite uplink moving north along the interstate.

Someone was traveling toward the hospital.

Nora’s emotions became impossible to separate.

Hope felt like betrayal.

Fear felt more honest.

Owen had managed private-security contracts for the Hawthorne Foundation before marrying her. He claimed the work ended years earlier.

Grace found his name inside Anna Reed’s investigation.

Anna described him as a possible whistleblower.

She also described him as a possible council operative.

No one knew which.

Daniel remembered Owen from the fertility clinic.

“He was there the day Anna demanded the embryo inventory.”

Nora stared.

“You met my husband?”

“I saw him in the hallway. I didn’t know his name.”

Owen had been connected to Daniel’s vanished embryos before marrying Nora.

Their first meeting at a charity event may have been arranged like everything else.

Nora looked toward Vanessa.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Did Mother?”

“Probably.”

The answer carried exhaustion rather than defense.

The listening device stored a short local recording.

Owen’s voice played.

“Nora, if you hear this, the report has already fractured the family. Do not let anyone separate the babies after birth. Their identities only make sense together.”

Nora pressed a hand to her stomach.

“Where are you?”

The recording continued.

“One child proves the clinic stole genetic material. One proves Bellmere replaced maternal identities. The third proves the council created a legal heir who never existed.”

Daniel replayed the final phrase.

A legal heir who never existed.

Fetus B might have no authentic parents in official records because both identities were fabricated.

Owen warned Nora not to trust the first person who claimed biological parenthood.

That included Daniel.

Daniel did not take offense.

“He’s right.”

Nora studied him.

“You might be one baby’s father.”

“I might be the source of a stolen sample.”

“You still care.”

“Yes.”

“But you’re not claiming the child.”

“No child should move from one stranger’s control to another because a laboratory printed a percentage.”

For the first time since the fall, Nora felt someone near her was not trying to own the outcome.

The satellite signal stopped outside St. Catherine’s.

Hospital security locked the maternity floor.

A man entered through the emergency department wearing a dark coat and carrying an old leather case.

Owen.

Alive.

Nora saw him through the glass corridor.

Her heart seemed to stop before the monitors reacted.

He raised both hands as officers surrounded him.

Vanessa moved toward the door.

Nora grabbed her wrist.

“No.”

“You don’t want to see him?”

“I want him searched first.”

Owen heard her through the glass.

Pain crossed his face.

But he nodded.

Security found no weapon.

Inside the leather case were original embryo-transfer records, Anna’s missing evidence file, and a sealed affidavit signed by Margaret.

Owen entered Nora’s room under police guard.

She looked directly at him.

“You let me bury an empty coffin.”

“I had to disappear.”

“You had to?”

“The council ordered your pregnancy before I could expose them.”

“You married me because of the embryos?”

“At first, I was assigned to watch you.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Every intimate memory changed shape.

Owen continued.

“Then I tried to destroy the transfer plan.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

“That does not repair the first lie.”

“No.”

He placed Margaret’s affidavit on the table.

It identified Fetus B’s maternal source.

Anna Reed.

Daniel stepped forward.

The independent report said Anna was not the mother of Fetus C.

Owen explained why.

Anna’s genetic contribution belonged to a different embryo.

Fetus B.

The paternal source was not Daniel.

It was Owen.

Nora stared at her husband.

Daniel stared at the man who had helped steal his marriage’s future.

Owen looked at both of them.
