Police returned to the mansion with a search team.
The hidden service passages led to an underground laboratory older than Hawthorne Reproductive Center.
Inside were embryo-storage tanks, sealed maternity ledgers, and video archives from the former recovery center.
The room had been operating recently.
One cryogenic tank remained powered.
Its inventory listed Anna’s three original embryos.
All three appeared present.
Daniel stared at the live police feed from the hospital.
“If those are real, Nora never carried ours.”
Grace warned that labels could be changed.
Every discovery produced another document, and every document had been created by someone with a motive.
The only reliable evidence would come from independently collected DNA compared against independently verified family samples.
The problem was that almost every adult’s identity had been manipulated.
Margaret and Marian shared records.
Owen and Marcus were twins separated at birth.
Anna and Claire may have occupied linked identities.
Nora’s own childhood samples had passed through Bellmere.
Even Daniel’s clinic sample had been stolen.
The council had turned genealogy into fog.
Police discovered a fourth file inside the underground laboratory.
GESTATIONAL SUBJECT: NORA HALE.
The transfer sheet listed four embryos, not three.
Dr. Warren reviewed Nora’s earliest scans.
At six weeks, four sacs were visible.
One stopped developing soon afterward.
The clinic told Nora the tissue had been naturally absorbed.
The file claimed it had been removed through a procedure while she was sedated and transferred into another carrier.
Nora stared at the screen from her hospital bed.
“There is another baby?”
Owen looked ill.
He had attended that appointment.
Dr. Hawthorne said Nora needed treatment for internal bleeding. Owen signed consent.
He never read the hidden embryo-recovery clause.
“Where was it transferred?” Mara asked.
The recipient field was encrypted.
Vanessa recognized the code.
It belonged to the private maternity residence connected to the council.
She had visited six months earlier.
A pregnant woman lived there under guard.
Vanessa believed she was carrying a council member’s child.
“She may have been carrying Nora’s fourth embryo,” Grace said.
Nora looked toward the neonatal suite.
The three babies were no longer only evidence of stolen origins.
A possible sibling existed somewhere else.
The Bellmere laboratory contained footage from the night of the transfer.
Nora lay sedated.
Dr. Hawthorne worked beside a masked woman.
Vanessa entered briefly and handed over a consent folder.
“I didn’t know what the procedure was,” Vanessa said.
“You brought the papers,” Nora replied.
“I thought they were protecting the pregnancy.”
“You always think ignorance changes your actions.”
Vanessa had no defense.
The masked woman removed her surgical covering for one second.
Anna.
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
“She was there.”
Hawthorne said the woman was not Daniel’s wife.
She was Claire Bell’s daughter, another red-haired woman trained to use Anna’s identity.
Daniel no longer believed him.
Police recovered a fingerprint from the footage equipment.
It matched Anna’s passport application.
But that passport could belong to either woman.
The fourth embryo transfer record unlocked when police inserted Margaret’s digital key.
Its genetic label read:
CONTROL EMBRYO—ORIGINAL HALE-BELL LINE.
No parent names.
The embryo had been created to serve as the reference against which the other three were compared.
Whoever possessed the fourth child could authenticate—or invalidate—the triplets’ identities.
The council did not need all three babies.
It needed the missing fourth.
Judge Voss withdrew the fetal-protection order minutes after police found the file.
She had accomplished what she wanted.
The triplets remained visible at the hospital while attention shifted away from the hidden child.
Then Bellmere’s stone gates opened.
A white medical van left the underground garage and headed toward the interstate.
