Chapter 15 - The Three Sealed ReportsPolice pursued the medical van through heavy rain.

The driver abandoned it beneath an interstate overpass.
Inside they found an empty infant carrier, warmed blankets, and a hospital bracelet.
The bracelet read:
BABY NORA HALE—FEMALE.
No infant remained.
A second vehicle had collected the child before officers arrived.
The trail divided toward three state lines.
No final recovery occurred.
No custody ruling was shown.
No one was formally declared the legal parent of any child.
At St. Catherine’s, Nora sat in a wheelchair between the neonatal bassinets.
Hope slept with one hand beside her face.
Grace moved restlessly beneath her blanket.
Truth watched the overhead light.
Nora had carried them.
She had protected them during the fall.
She had survived the surgery that brought them safely into the world.
Whatever the genetic reports said, that history could not be erased.
Daniel stood beyond the glass.
He did not ask to hold Fetus C—the infant now called Truth—even though the first report named him as her father.
Owen remained farther down the hallway with police.
Marcus had been separated for questioning.
Vanessa waited beside the nurses’ station after surrendering Bellmere’s access codes and every forged document she possessed.
None of that absolved her.
It was only the first action she had taken that did not demand a reward.
The woman calling herself Marian disappeared again from Bellmere before police secured the underground lab.
Dr. Hawthorne claimed he could identify the real Margaret, real Marian, real Anna, and real Claire.
He wanted immunity first.
Detective Collins refused.
Anna’s video connection did not return.
Grace Morgan sent the newborn DNA samples to three independent laboratories under coded identities.
Each laboratory used fresh reference samples collected under observation.
Nora.
Daniel.
Owen.
Marcus.
Vanessa.
The woman believed to be Marian.
Preserved samples from Margaret, Anna, Claire Bell, Michael Hale, and Richard Hale were included only when multiple sources verified them.
Three sealed reports arrived the following evening.
Dr. Warren placed them on the table inside a secure conference room.
Nora entered in her wheelchair.
Daniel, Mara, Grace, and a court-appointed child advocate attended.
Vanessa remained outside by Nora’s choice.
Owen and Marcus were not permitted inside.
“No report leaves this room until all three are opened,” Mara said.
Nora agreed.
Dr. Warren opened Hope’s report first.
The biological mother was Nora.
The paternal profile matched Michael Hale’s verified tissue.
Michael was not Nora’s uncle.
Independent family reconstruction identified him as Margaret’s unrelated foster brother.
The feared close-family relationship had been manufactured by falsified Hale records.
Hope was Nora’s biological daughter.
Nora began crying.
One truth had survived.
Grace’s report came next.
Anna Reed was the biological mother.
Neither Owen nor Marcus was the father.
The paternal profile matched Daniel.
Daniel stared.
According to the first reports, he fathered Fetus C.
The newborn test now said he fathered Grace.
Embryo identities had been switched again.
Dr. Warren reached for Truth’s report.
Before she opened it, the hospital lights flickered.
The neonatal-unit alarms activated.
Mara ran toward the door.
A voice came through the conference-room speaker.
Margaret Hale’s voice.
“Do not open the third report.”
Nora gripped the wheelchair arms.
Her mother’s voice continued.
“The council needs you to believe every child has one set of parents. That is not how the final embryo was created.”
Daniel looked toward the sealed envelope.
“What does that mean?”
The speaker went silent.
Security video appeared on the wall monitor.
A woman walked through the neonatal hallway wearing Dr. Warren’s white coat and identification badge.
Dr. Warren was still inside the conference room.
The woman approached the triplets’ secured room.
Her face matched Anna’s.
She carried the missing fourth baby.
Nora tried to stand.
Mara reached the door.
It would not open.
The duplicate doctor placed the fourth infant beside Hope, Grace, and Truth.
Four bassinets now stood together.
The woman looked directly into the security camera.
“You have been asking whose babies they are.”
She removed four sealed embryo labels from her pocket.
Each carried a different identification number from every report opened so far.
“The better question is which three were born to Nora.”
Nora’s breathing stopped.
The woman lifted one infant from the bassinets.
The camera angle prevented anyone from seeing which child she chose.
Then the monitor went black.
On the table, Truth’s unopened DNA report began vibrating.
A phone had been sealed inside the envelope.
Nora tore it open.
Instead of a genetic result, she found a handwritten message:
ONE OF THE THREE BABIES DELIVERED IN NORA’S OPERATING ROOM WAS SWITCHED BEFORE THE BRACELETS WERE ATTACHED.
Beneath the sentence were four infant footprints.
Only three belonged to children currently registered at St. Catherine’s.
The fourth matched the missing baby from Bellmere.
Nora looked toward the locked door as newborn cries echoed from the hallway.

She no longer knew whether the woman had brought the missing child back—
or had come to exchange one again.
