Ava stood beside the damaged console while Julian stared at the result.
AVA BENNETT ASHFORD AND JULIAN ASHFORD: NO SIBLING RELATIONSHIP DETECTED.
Julian exhaled.
Ava felt no relief.
The second result appeared.
AVA BENNETT ASHFORD AND EDMUND ASHFORD: PATERNITY EXCLUDED.
Henry Bennett had been her biological father.
Claire closed her eyes.
Ava looked at her.
“You knew.”
“I believed.”
“You let me fear otherwise.”
“I did not trust Edmund’s archive.”
“Yet the archive was right.”
“Tonight.”
Ava understood the damage of living inside manufactured uncertainty. Even true results felt temporary.
A third result appeared.
CALEB GREER AND EDMUND ASHFORD: PATERNITY CONFIRMED.
Caleb watched without emotion.
Then another line loaded.
JULIAN ASHFORD AND EDMUND ASHFORD: PATERNITY EXCLUDED.
The room became silent.
Eleanor stared at the screen.
Julian turned toward her.
“Who is my father?”
She looked away.
Edmund had built the protocol around blood while never verifying the son he raised publicly.
Julian was not an Ashford by biology.
His entire life had been shaped around an inheritance that never belonged to him.
Caleb was Edmund’s only confirmed adult son.
The succession system updated.
Julian’s authorization vanished completely.
Caleb became primary heir.
Ava’s unborn child remained listed because of her marriage, but its blood connection to the Ashfords was now unconfirmed until birth.
Eleanor’s power collapsed further.
She laughed softly.
“Do you see what truth does? It does not free anyone. It simply chooses a new favorite.”
Julian faced her.
“Who is my father?”
“Edmund’s younger brother, Charles.”
Thomas looked shocked.
Charles Ashford died in a hunting accident thirty-five years earlier.
Eleanor had been engaged to him first.
After Charles died, Edmund married her publicly and raised Julian as his own.
“Did Edmund know?” Julian asked.
“From the beginning.”
“Then why raise me as heir?”
“Because Caleb was hidden and Claire would not return. You were useful.”
The word destroyed something in Julian.
Ava had seen that expression in herself repeatedly.
The moment a person realized love had been organized around usefulness.
Caleb studied the frozen financial system.
“I can dismantle the protocol now.”
Claire shook her head.
“Not while Edmund remains founder.”
“He fled.”
“He didn’t flee. He moved to the original control site.”
“Where?”
Claire looked toward the estate map.
The neoclassical mansion was only the visible center of Ravenscourt.
Beneath the hunting grounds ran tunnels connecting the crypt, kennels, greenhouse, chapel, and an abandoned quarry.
The original control site lay beneath the quarry lake.
Edmund called it the Crown Room.
From there, he could reverse the account freeze and destroy Lantern Nine’s archive.
Ava secured the portable server against her body.
“He needs this to erase the evidence.”
“He needs you,” Claire said.
“Why?”
“The Bennett reversion clause can override his founder authority. You are the only person who can permanently separate the estate from the succession network.”
Eleanor looked toward Ava’s abdomen.
“And her child can reconnect it later.”
Claire nodded grimly.
Edmund would not simply kill Ava.
He needed her alive long enough to sign a new deed—or declared unstable so someone could sign for her.
Mason’s radio activated.
The recovery team had retreated from the mansion.
They were moving toward the quarry.
With them was the estate’s medical director, Dr. Samuel Voss.
The same doctor who accessed Ava’s pregnancy test.
Julian looked at Ava.
“They’ll create the instability record tonight.”
A helicopter sounded above the roof.
Not leaving.
Landing.
Rachel Vaughn, Ava’s attorney, arrived with two state investigators and a court preservation order.
For the first time, outside authority had reached Ravenscourt.
Rachel entered the crypt carrying sealed documents.
“The assault footage reached the court.”
Ava almost smiled.
Then Rachel looked at the blood results.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Rachel opened the order.
Someone had filed an emergency petition claiming Ava suffered a violent psychiatric episode, provoked trained animals, assaulted Eleanor, and now held the family captive inside the estate.
The petitioner was Julian.
Ava turned toward him.
“I didn’t file that.”
The signature was verified.
The filing time was twenty minutes before the hunt began.
