Chapter 11 - The Petition Written Before the DogsRachel examined the petition inside Lantern Nine.
It described events with disturbing accuracy.
Ava wearing a white dress.
An argument over property documents.
Dogs reacting to a compact electronic device.
Eleanor falling in the mud.
Julian attempting to protect his mother.
The only difference was the role assigned to each person.
Ava became the aggressor.
Eleanor became the victim.
Julian became the frightened husband.
Edmund’s legal team had prepared the story before anyone entered the lawn.
The petition included a psychiatric evaluation signed by Dr. Samuel Voss.
Ava had never met him.
The report said she suffered from persecutory delusions related to her mother’s disappearance.
Claire read it.
“He used my history to write your diagnosis.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Your mother taught you to see conspiracies.”
“The cameras taught me to see your hands on the leashes.”
Rachel confirmed the court had not granted the petition yet. The assault footage contradicted it.
But Edmund’s attorneys could argue that Ava triggered the dogs with the emitter.
Thomas explained the device.
It did not command the animals to attack Eleanor. It interrupted a scent-linked aggression sequence and recalled them toward the person holding the transmitter.
Eleanor’s violent pulling caused the dogs to redirect.
A canine-behavior specialist would need to verify that.
Until then, both sides possessed competing narratives.
The Dobermans themselves carried another source of evidence.
Thomas removed their leather collars.
Each contained a training chip recording command frequencies, stress levels, handler proximity, and scent cues.
The data showed Eleanor activated an attack signal from a controller hidden inside the handle of her white hunting umbrella.
The same umbrella Claire briefly held in the library.
Mason recovered it.
Inside was a transmitter programmed to make the dogs associate Ava’s perfume with a threat.
Eleanor had applied a matching scent to Ava’s chair before dinner.
The attack was deliberate.
Rachel sealed the collar chips and umbrella as evidence.
Eleanor’s confidence finally cracked.
Then Thomas opened the second dog’s collar.
A smaller memory capsule fell out.
He had not installed it.
The capsule contained audio from the library after Claire disappeared.
Eleanor spoke to Edmund through the hidden speaker.
“You promised Julian would inherit if Ava signed.”
Edmund answered:
“Julian was never eligible.”
“You used my son.”
“He is Charles’s son.”
“You raised him.”
“I trained him to keep Caleb away from the estate.”
Eleanor’s cruelty had not protected Julian.
It had protected her position.
Edmund always intended Caleb to become the emergency heir if Claire’s line returned.
The hunt was designed to accomplish two goals:
Force Ava’s signature.
Expose whether Caleb would protect her.
If Caleb intervened, Edmund would know Thomas had turned him against the family.
Every response had been measured.
Ava looked toward Caleb.
“You knew the hunt might happen.”
“Thomas warned me.”
“Did you know Edmund wanted to observe you?”
“No.”
“Why weren’t you on the lawn?”
“I was trying to reach the missing drive.”
“You chose evidence before stopping the dogs.”
Caleb’s silence mirrored Julian’s earlier failure.
Different reason.
Same child of the system.
Ava stood between two men who claimed to oppose Edmund but had still allowed her body to become the test.
Claire touched her arm.
“We leave the estate now.”
Ava shook her head.
“If we leave, Edmund destroys the Crown Room.”
“The archive is copied.”
“The property network isn’t. He will move the trust into another structure and begin again.”
“You are pregnant.”
“I know.”
“Then survival is not cowardice.”
“No. But neither is refusing to leave the next woman for later.”
Ava decided to reach the Crown Room with state investigators, Mason, Rachel, and Claire.
Julian and Caleb both offered to help.
She refused to trust either alone.
Thomas remained with Eleanor and the dogs.
Before Ava left Lantern Nine, the capsule played one final audio file.
Edmund said:
“When Ava reaches the Crown Room, activate the maternal evaluation. Claire will make sure she comes.”
Ava turned toward her mother.
Claire’s face went pale.
“I never agreed to that.”
The audio continued.
Claire’s own voice answered:
May you like
“I’ll bring her.”
