The stone wall opened.
A staircase descended into warm electric light.
The command room below contained live estate maps, financial accounts, private cameras, and medical profiles.
Ava’s name filled the central screen.
Her pregnancy appeared in a laboratory report.
Blood test date:
Four days earlier.
The clinic that confirmed the pregnancy belonged to an Ashford foundation.
Someone had accessed the result before Ava did.
Julian stared at the file.
“You’re pregnant?”
Ava did not answer.
He stepped closer.
“Is it mine?”
She looked at him with disgust.
“You arranged our marriage, demanded my land, and watched dogs attack me. You do not get to begin with ownership.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“It is exactly what your family means every time it asks about a child.”
A speaker activated.
Edmund’s voice was no longer distorted.
“Welcome home, Ava.”
A camera showed him inside another room. He appeared seventy, thin but alert, seated beneath a carved Ashford crest.
“You murdered my mother’s life,” Ava said.
“I preserved it.”
“You imprisoned her.”
“I hid her from Eleanor’s impulsiveness.”
Eleanor’s face appeared on a second feed from the library.
She heard him.
“Impulsiveness?”
Edmund had allowed her to believe she controlled the hunts. In reality, he documented each incident and used the resulting fear to enforce family agreements.
Eleanor was both perpetrator and instrument.
She had chosen cruelty willingly.
But Edmund had designed the system around it.
“You let her attack Claire,” Ava said.
“Claire had discovered confidential land negotiations.”
“She discovered theft.”
“She misunderstood necessity.”
“You stole Bennett property.”
“I consolidated it.”
Ava searched the command console.
The Ashford succession protocol was not merely a family custom. It controlled a web of trusts, holding companies, political donations, private security firms, and inheritance agreements.
The controller could freeze assets, appoint guardians, and determine estate occupancy.
Julian had been expected to inherit after proving he could secure Ava’s signature.
His refusal to intervene during the hunt was recorded as weakness.
Eleanor’s visible loss of control marked her unstable.
Ava’s unborn child, carrying both Bennett property rights and Ashford blood, became the protocol’s preferred future heir.
Edmund intended to place the child under Ashford guardianship before birth.
“You cannot control an unborn baby,” Ava said.
Edmund smiled.
“You signed hospital consent documents when you married Julian.”
The documents contained a hidden clause granting Ravenscourt’s private medical board authority during “maternal instability.”
The dog attack could be used to portray Ava as emotionally disturbed.
The emitter in her hand could be described as the device that provoked the animals.
Eleanor’s lawyers would argue Ava staged the incident.
The security footage helped Ava.
But Edmund had built a second interpretation.
Ava inserted the portable server into the command console.
Lantern Nine began copying every succession file.
Edmund noticed.
“Remove that drive.”
“No.”
“Claire’s safety depends on your cooperation.”
“Then show me where she is.”
The library feed changed.
Claire had vanished.
Thomas remained tied to the chair.
Eleanor stared around in confusion.
Mason entered through a side door and cut Thomas free.
The hunting umbrella lay on the floor.
Claire had used the distraction to escape.
A message appeared on Ava’s screen.
I AM INSIDE THE WALLS. DO NOT TRUST CALEB’S STORY.
Claire had sent it from the mansion’s internal network.
Ava looked toward the chapel entrance.
Caleb stood outside with the Dobermans.
If Claire warned against him, his claim of being her son might be false.
Julian searched the succession records.
Caleb Greer appeared as an Ashford security asset.
Biological father:
Edmund Ashford.
Mother:
Claire Bennett.
Claire’s hidden son was also Edmund’s child.
