Chapter 6 - The Woman Beside EleanorClaire looked directly into the library camera.

Her silver-blond hair was cut short. A thin scar crossed her left cheek. She wore a dark green coat and no visible restraints.
Eleanor handed her the hunting umbrella.
Claire accepted it.
Ava felt the room tilt.
Mason studied the feed.
“Could this be old footage?”
“The timestamp is live,” Julian said.
Ava pressed the intercom.
“Mom?”
Claire’s expression changed.
Barely.
Then she faced the camera.
“Ava, bring the portable server to the library.”
“Why are you with her?”
“Because Thomas took something that belongs to me.”
Thomas shook his head.
“She’s not here by choice.”
Claire struck the table with the umbrella.
“Be quiet.”
The words sounded harsh.
But Ava noticed her mother’s left hand.
Two fingers pressed against her coat.
Then one.
Then two again.
Thomas had taught Ava the kennel signals.
Two-one-two meant:
Pretend obedience. Hidden threat.
Claire was performing for someone beyond the camera.
Eleanor stood too calmly for a woman whose estate had just been frozen. She believed the recovery team had already secured the mansion.
But the true threat might not be Eleanor.
A voice came through the library speakers.
Male.
Distorted.
“Bring the archive, Ava.”
Julian went pale.
“My father.”
Ava stared at him.
“Edmund is dead.”
“He died ten years ago.”
“Did you see his body?”
“No.”
The Ashford family survived through disappearances, staged deaths, and hidden control. Claire’s return had already proved the official story unreliable.
The distorted voice continued.
“Your mother has protected you by remaining silent. Do not make her sacrifice meaningless.”
Claire looked toward the ceiling, confirming the voice controlled the room remotely.
Mason traced the signal.
It originated from beneath the estate chapel.
The Ashford crypt.
Eleanor had not been the final authority.
Her supposedly dead husband remained beneath Ravenscourt.
Julian sat down.
“My mother told me he died from a stroke.”
“Perhaps she believed he did,” Ava said.
Eleanor looked toward the camera.
She did not appear surprised.
She had known.
The recovery team struck the Lantern Nine door again.
Mason estimated less than two minutes before entry.
Ava chose the tunnel.
She, Mason, and Julian moved through darkness beneath the kennel hill. The portable server hung from Ava’s shoulder.
The Dobermans followed without command.
The tunnel opened among old stone markers engraved with the dogs’ names.
Rain had slowed.
The mansion glowed through the trees.
Ava could reach the library from the east garden, but Eleanor’s men controlled the terrace.
Julian pointed toward the estate chapel.
“If Edmund is alive, he has a command room beneath the crypt.”
“Can you enter?”
“The family ring opens it.”
He still wore the Ashford signet.
Ava looked at him.
“Why help me?”
“Because my father terrifies me more than my mother.”
“That isn’t courage.”
“No.”
He removed the ring.
“But it is the truth.”
Ava took it.
Mason split the plan.
He would reach the library and protect Thomas.
Ava and Julian would enter the crypt.
Before they separated, the Dobermans stopped.
Both animals stared toward the trees.
A man stepped from the darkness.
Thomas’s missing assistant, Caleb Greer.
He raised his hands.
“I’m not armed.”
Ava had met him twice at the kennel.
“Where were you when Thomas was taken?”
“Trying to reach Claire.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire is my mother.”
Ava stared.
Claire had another child.
Caleb continued.
“She had me after disappearing from Ravenscourt. Edmund found us five years ago and took control of her protection network.”
“Why didn’t she contact me?”
“She believed Edmund would kill you if she did.”
“Why return tonight?”
“Because the dog attack activated something larger than the property clause.”
“What?”
Caleb looked toward the mansion.
“The Ashford succession protocol.”
Julian’s face changed.
The protocol selected the next family controller whenever an Ashford heir publicly failed to protect the estate.
Julian’s inaction during the hunt disqualified him.
Eleanor’s recorded violence endangered her authority.
The system would now search for another blood heir.
Caleb looked at Ava.
“Edmund believes that heir is your unborn child.”
Ava froze.
She had learned she was pregnant only four days earlier.

She had told no one.
👉 Claire’s hidden son revealed Edmund was alive—and that Ravenscourt’s succession system had already identified Ava’s unborn child.
