Rachel Carter walked down the stone steps of her parents’ McLean estate six days after an emergency C-section, carrying her newborn son in a soft pink blanket.
Every step hurt.
She did not show it.
Her dark Army dress jacket sat perfectly over the long pale-green embroidered ceremonial skirt. Her medals caught the sunset light. Her blonde hair was pinned into a low bun, elegant and controlled.
Captain Ethan Carter walked beside her in full dress uniform, one arm steady beneath hers.

“You froze our accounts over a family misunderstanding?”
Rachel stopped.
The baby slept against her chest.

Richard’s face tightened.
Diane lowered her hand from her mouth.
Victoria stepped forward, champagne gown catching the light, anger overpowering caution.
“Mom and Dad deserved that money!”
The driveway went silent.
Rachel’s eyes sharpened.
Ethan moved one measured step forward.
“Then tell us why it went to a woman declared dead fifteen years ago.”
Diane nearly lost her balance.
Richard’s anger vanished.
Behind Rachel’s black luxury vehicle, a government SUV waited near the curb.
Its rear door opened.
Special Agent Marcus Grant stepped out with a sealed evidence folder while two investigators quietly blocked the driveway.
He looked directly at Richard, Diane, and Victoria.
“Nobody leaves. The account owner just arrived.”
A second vehicle door began to open outside the frame.
Rachel held her newborn closer.
