Chapter 7

Richard tried to recover through outrage.

It had worked for him for decades.

“Agent Grant,” he snapped, “this is private property.”

Grant stopped at the base of the steps.

“And an active federal benefits investigation.”

Richard looked toward the relatives.

Some stared at the ground.

Others watched him as if seeing the house’s foundation crack.

Diane whispered, “Richard.”

He ignored her.

“You have no authority to detain my family at my own home.”

Grant’s tone did not change.

“I said nobody leaves.”

Victoria stepped back toward the doorway.

One investigator shifted subtly, blocking the path without touching her.

The movement was small.

Precise.

Rachel noticed because she had done field support during investigations where body language mattered more than force.

Ethan remained beside her, one shoulder angled protectively toward Richard.

The baby slept through everything.

That almost broke Rachel.

The innocence of his breathing against her chest while adults stood around arguing over stolen money, forged forms, and a person who should not have been alive in any account system.

Richard pointed at Rachel.

“She weaponized her old position against us.”

Rachel answered softly, “I reported fraud.”

“You reported your father.”

“I reported fraud.”

Diane’s eyes filled, but Rachel no longer trusted tears from people who cried only when consequences arrived.

Victoria looked toward the SUV.

“Who’s in there?”

Grant did not answer.

That silence terrified them more than any name would have.
