Chapter 9

The rear door of the government SUV opened halfway.

Only darkness inside.

A hand moved near the edge of the frame, then stopped.

Rachel did not turn fully.

She kept her body angled toward her parents.

She wanted to see their faces when the past stepped out.

Grant spoke again, calm and firm.

“The person arriving is tied to the account activity under review. No one is to approach, contact, or leave before statements are taken.”

Richard’s lips parted.

“This is impossible.”

Rachel’s voice was quiet.

“Which part?”

He stared at her.

“The part where she’s dead?”

Diane closed her eyes.

Victoria turned sharply toward their mother.

“She?”

Diane’s hand flew to her mouth.

The word had slipped out of Richard like blood from a reopened wound.

She.

Not it.

Not the account.

Not the name.

A person.

Rachel’s grip tightened around the pink blanket.

She did not ask who.

Not there.

Not in front of everyone.

Not before Grant secured the scene.

Ethan looked at Richard with contained fury.

“You built an eleven-year theft on a dead woman’s name.”

Richard whispered, “You don’t understand.”

Rachel answered, “No. I investigate.”

The distinction silenced him.

Investigators did not need full understanding before preserving evidence.

They needed facts.
