Chapter 5

The stone steps were colder than Rachel expected.

She moved carefully, one hand supporting her newborn, the other gripping Ethan’s arm.

Pain pulsed through her abdomen with every descent.

She refused to bend.

Ethan leaned closer.

“Slow.”

Rachel nodded once.

Behind them, Richard’s voice exploded through the doorway.

“You froze our accounts over a family misunderstanding?”

That word gave her strength.

Misunderstanding.

Eleven years of benefit diversion.

Forged authorization forms.

False routing instructions.

A dead woman’s name tied to live account movement.

And he still called it misunderstanding.

Rachel stopped on the third step.

The baby stirred.

She waited until he settled, then turned.

“Eleven years of stolen military benefits is not a misunderstanding.”

The sentence hit the doorway like a command.

Diane’s face changed.

Just slightly.

Enough for Rachel to know she had struck the right timeline.

Victoria stepped forward before Richard could stop her.

“Mom and Dad deserved that money!”

The words came out sharp, emotional, careless.

Then silence.

Victoria seemed to hear herself only after everyone else did.

Richard reached toward her.

Too late.

Ethan’s expression became terrifyingly calm.

Rachel’s eyes moved from Victoria to Diane, then to Richard.

“Thank you,” she said quietly.

Victoria frowned.

“For what?”

Rachel did not answer.

She did not need to.

The admission existed now.

In the open.

In front of relatives.

In front of mansion cameras.

In front of the government SUV waiting behind her car.

Richard finally noticed the vehicle.

That was when his confidence began to drain.
