Chapter 4

The dinner inside the mansion had ended before dessert.

Rachel never sat down.

She stood in the entry hall with Ethan beside her and the baby asleep in her arms while Diane complained that Rachel had “created panic” by freezing family accounts.

Rachel corrected her once.

“Government benefit channels were frozen pending review.”

Richard said, “Same thing.”

“No,” Rachel said. “It isn’t.”

Victoria rolled her eyes.

“You always hide behind official words.”

Rachel looked at her sister.

“They’re useful when crimes are dressed as family favors.”

That was when the room changed.

The relatives went quiet.

A cousin set down a glass.

Diane’s jaw tightened.

Richard stepped closer.

“You will undo this tonight.”

Ethan moved with him.

One inch.

Not threatening.

Enough.

Richard stopped.

Rachel’s surgical incision throbbed under the structured fabric. She shifted her son carefully and breathed through it.

Diane noticed and mistook pain for weakness.

“Rachel, you just had a baby. You’re exhausted. Confused. Emotional.”

Rachel almost smiled.

That word again.

Emotional.

They used it whenever she became accurate.

Victoria said, “Mom and Dad managed everything while you were gone. You should be grateful.”

“Gone?” Rachel asked.

“Deployments. Training. Investigations. Whatever excuse you used.”

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

Rachel looked around the chandelier-lit foyer.

The marble floors.

The portraits.

The flowers.

The wealth her parents treated like proof of virtue.

Then she turned toward the door.

“This conversation is over.”

Richard shouted after her as she stepped outside.

That was when the confrontation moved from the mansion into the sunset.
