PART 1
“They slapped his wife because they thought he was overseas… then the soldier walked through the door with witnesses.”
Gloria’s hand was still raised when Daniel stepped through the front door.
Audrey was pressed against the foyer wall in a red satin dress, one cheek burning red, one hand gripping the banister to keep herself from falling.
Marcus was laughing near the staircase.
Tessa stood beside him with a cruel little smile, enjoying the moment like it was a show arranged for her.
On the console table lay a stack of papers.
Property transfer forms.
A pen.
A legal folder.
And Audrey’s phone, face down, just out of reach.
Gloria pointed at Audrey as if the slap had not been violence, but punctuation.
“Tomorrow, you sign the house over to Marcus.”
Audrey tasted blood on her lip.
Then she saw Daniel.
Camouflage uniform.
Dust on his boots.
Duffel bag in his hand.
Eyes fixed on the mark on her face.
For one second, nobody else knew he was there.
Audrey’s fear changed into something quiet and sharp.
She looked back at Gloria.
“You really should leave before Daniel gets home.”
Marcus laughed harder.
“Daniel is overseas, sweetheart.”
Then the duffel bag hit the floor.
The sound cracked through the foyer.
Everyone turned.
Daniel stepped inside.
His face had gone still in the terrifying way only soldiers understood.
“Take your hands off my wife.”
Gloria’s mouth opened.
Tessa stumbled back.
Marcus went pale.
“You’re supposed to be overseas!”
Daniel looked at him.
Then at the papers.
Then at Audrey.
“I heard every word.”
Behind him, two officers and a lawyer stood on the porch, visible through the open door.
Daniel moved in front of Audrey without touching her until she reached for him first.
Then he took her hand.
“The witnesses are outside.”
Gloria lowered her hand slowly.
Marcus looked from the officers to the papers.
Tessa stopped smiling.
And Audrey finally let herself breathe.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You did this while I was deployed because you thought she was alone.”
He looked at his mother.
May you like
“She wasn’t.”
