PART 5
Audrey had kept her own evidence too.
Not because she wanted to destroy Daniel’s family.
Because she wanted to survive them.
She went upstairs with Officer Grant and returned carrying a small wooden box from the linen closet.
Gloria laughed when she saw it.
“Oh, now she has a treasure chest.”
Audrey opened it.
Inside were not jewels.
There were receipts.
Printed text messages.
A flash drive.
Photographs.
Notes written by hand because Marcus had once taken her phone for three hours.
Daniel looked at the box and felt something inside him break.
Audrey had been living like a witness in her own home.
She handed the first page to Claire.
“Gloria told me Daniel wanted Marcus to manage the property if anything happened overseas.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
The second page was a screenshot from Tessa.
Just sign and this ends.
Mom says Daniel won’t protect you from over there.
Tessa began crying.
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
Audrey looked at her.
“How did you mean it?”
Tessa had no answer.
The third file was audio.
Audrey pressed play.
Gloria’s voice filled the foyer.
A military wife should understand sacrifice.
If Daniel dies, do you really think we will let you keep this house?
Daniel closed his eyes.
The sentence landed harder than the slap.
They had used his possible death as leverage.
Claire paused the recording.
“That is enough for coercion.”
Audrey shook her head.
“There is more.”
She opened a photo.
A bruise on her wrist.
Then another.
A chair pushed against the kitchen door.
A broken frame on the floor.
A half-written letter to Daniel with the corner torn.
Daniel looked at Audrey.
“Why didn’t you send these?”
She swallowed.
“They said if I caused trouble, they would send you proof I was cheating.”
Marcus smiled faintly.
Too faint.
But Daniel saw it.
“What proof?”
Audrey hesitated.
Tessa whispered, “The neighbor photos.”
Gloria turned on her.
“Tessa.”
Officer Grant looked up.
“What neighbor photos?”
Tessa began to shake.
“They staged pictures.”
“With Mr. Bell from next door.”
“He’s seventy-three.”
“They made it look like Audrey was meeting a man while Daniel was gone.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked away.
