PART 4
Marcus was not as calm once the forged signature appeared.
Claire placed the document on the table.
Daniel’s name sat at the bottom.
The letters were too round.
The pressure too light.
The angle wrong.
Audrey noticed Daniel staring at it.
“I told them it didn’t look like yours.”
Marcus laughed.
“She thinks she’s a handwriting expert now.”
Daniel looked at his brother.
“She is an expert on me.”
The room went quiet.
For five years, Marcus had treated Audrey like decoration.
Pretty.
Useful.
Disposable.
He had never imagined Daniel valued her observations more than his brother’s excuses.
Claire opened another folder.
“Mr. Whitmore, this document was submitted using an email address connected to you.”
Marcus’s face tightened.
“That proves nothing.”
“It proves enough for preservation.”
Officer Grant asked, “Did you submit this document?”
Marcus looked at Gloria.
Gloria said nothing.
Tessa whispered, “Mom said Daniel would approve it later.”
Marcus spun toward her.
“Shut up.”
Tessa flinched.
Audrey saw it.
So did Daniel.
There was the real family structure.
Gloria commanded.
Marcus executed.
Tessa mocked whoever Gloria told her to mock because it kept Gloria from turning on her.
Daniel’s anger shifted.
It did not disappear.
It widened.
“How long have you been doing this to people in this family?”
Gloria lifted her chin.
“We protect what is ours.”
Audrey answered before Daniel could.
“I am not yours.”
Gloria’s eyes flashed.
“No.”
“You are the problem.”
Daniel stepped in front of Audrey again.
“No.”
“She is the reason you got caught.”
Claire’s phone buzzed.
She checked it and looked at Daniel.
“The bank confirms the transfer inquiry is frozen.”
Marcus cursed under his breath.
That one reaction did more damage than any confession.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You were really going to do it.”
Marcus’s mask broke.
“You gave half a house to a woman who might leave you.”
Daniel stared at him.
“And you tried to steal a whole house from a woman because you thought I wouldn’t come back in time.”
No one spoke.
Outside, the porch witnesses waited.

Inside, Marcus finally looked afraid.
