part 6

PART 6
Daniel asked Audrey one question after the officers finished documenting the room.
“Do you want them out?”
He did not ask Gloria.
He did not ask Marcus.
He did not ask what would make the family comfortable.
He asked Audrey.
That nearly made her cry.
For months, every choice had been taken from her in small pieces.
Who could visit.
Who could call.
Which door stayed locked.
Which document she had to review.
Which insult she was expected to swallow.
Now Daniel stood in the foyer, waiting for her answer.
Audrey looked at Gloria.
Then Marcus.
Then Tessa.
“Yes.”
Gloria gasped.
“This is Daniel’s house.”
Daniel answered without looking at her.
“It is Audrey’s house too.”
Claire turned to the officers.
“We are requesting immediate removal pending protective order.”
Gloria stepped toward Daniel.
“Son, listen to me.”
He stepped back.
That small movement hurt her more than shouting would have.
“Do not call me son while my wife’s blood is still on her lip.”
Gloria’s mouth closed.
Marcus exploded.
“You are choosing her over us?”
Daniel looked at him.
“I am choosing the person you attacked.”
“That should not confuse you.”
Tessa sank onto the stair.
Her makeup had run down her face.
Audrey expected to feel satisfaction.
Instead, she felt tired.
Cruelty had not made Tessa powerful.
It had made her pathetic.
The officers escorted Gloria out first.
She walked like a queen leaving a courtroom she planned to appeal.
Marcus followed, muttering about lawyers.
Tessa stopped at the door and looked back at Audrey.
“I’m sorry.”
Audrey did not answer.
Not every apology deserves immediate shelter.
The door closed.
The house exhaled.
Daniel turned to Audrey.
This time, he did not touch her.
“Can I hold you?”
Audrey’s face collapsed.
She stepped into his arms.
The soldier who had stayed controlled through the whole confrontation finally trembled.
Audrey felt it.
He was angry.
Guilty.
Terrified.
But he held her like she was something sacred, not something stolen.
“I came as fast as I could,” he whispered.
Audrey pressed her face into his uniform.
May you like
“You came before I signed.”
