Chapter 3

PART 3

Daniel did not understand the sentence at first.

Then I’m not your bank account either.

He looked from Rachel to Jason, waiting for someone to make it smaller.

Rachel did not.

Jason crossed his arms.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

Rachel picked up the broken airplane pieces and placed them gently on the console table.

“It means your private coaching invoice due tomorrow will not be paid by me.”

Jason blinked.

“My what?”

“Your baseball coach.”

“The winter training camp.”

“The travel team deposit.”

Jason looked at Daniel.

“Dad?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Rachel, not now.”

“Yes, now.”

Her voice stayed calm.

That was what made it terrifying.

“No more unlimited rides.”

“No more emergency money.”

“No more phone upgrades.”

“No more card charges under my name.”

“No more pretending I am family only when a bill is due.”

Alyssa finally spoke from the wall.

“Rachel…”

Rachel turned to her, and her expression softened just slightly.

“I am not talking about basic care.”

“You will have food, safety, school, and medical needs.”

“I will not punish children by withholding necessities.”

Then her eyes moved back to Jason.

“But disrespect will no longer be funded as a luxury.”

Jason’s face reddened.

“You can’t do that.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Rachel pays for those extras.”

Jason looked stunned.

That was the moment Rachel realized he truly had not known.

Daniel had let his children believe everything came from him.

The house.

The comforts.

The vacations.

The private lessons.

The woman they disrespected was the one quietly keeping their life soft.

Jason’s shock turned into humiliation.

Then anger.

“So what?”

“You bought your way into being our mom?”

Rachel flinched.

Ethan reached for her hand.

That small hand saved her from answering with pain.

She looked at Jason.

“No.”

“I bought peace because your father kept asking me to.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Alyssa stared at him.

Jason’s voice rose.

“You can’t just stop.”

Rachel’s answer was quiet.

“I can.”

May you like

“And I did.”
