Chapter 7

PART 7

Rachel met the lawyer at 11:00 a.m.

Her name was Claire Monroe.

She listened more than she spoke.

Rachel explained the marriage.

The finances.

The stepchildren.

Ethan.

The broken airplane.

The sentence Jason threw like a weapon.

You’re not my real mom.

Claire did not react emotionally.

That helped.

Emotion had swallowed Rachel for years.

She needed structure now.

Claire asked, “Are you considering divorce or separation?”

Rachel looked down at her hands.

“I don’t know.”

“Do you feel Ethan is emotionally safe in the home?”

Rachel did not answer quickly enough.

Claire nodded.

“That is an answer.”

Rachel’s throat tightened.

“I don’t want to abandon Alyssa.”

“What about Jason?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I don’t want to hate a child.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Boundaries are not hatred.”

Rachel breathed out slowly.

That sentence felt like a window opening.

Claire helped her separate the issues.

Basic care.

Household obligations.

Marital finances.

Luxury spending.

Education payments.

Emotional safety.

Documentation.

Temporary custody planning if separation happened.

Rachel was not trying to punish children with poverty.

She was trying to stop being used as a wallet by a family that refused to respect her son’s humanity.

Before leaving, Claire asked one final question.

“Does Daniel know how much you are considering leaving?”

Rachel thought of his tired face.

His pancakes.

His late attempt to correct Jason.

“No.”

“Tell him clearly.”

Rachel gave a sad smile.

“I have been telling him softly for years.”

Claire’s voice was gentle.

“Then stop being soft.”

That evening, Rachel asked Daniel to sit in the living room after the kids went upstairs.

Ethan slept in her room again.

Jason slammed his door.

Alyssa hovered at the landing for a moment, then disappeared.

Rachel placed one paper on the coffee table.

A temporary separation plan.

Daniel stared at it.

His face went white.

“Rachel.”

“I am not filing tonight.”

“But I am making a plan.”

His eyes filled.

“Because of yesterday?”

Rachel shook her head.

May you like

“Because yesterday was the first time you could not pretend not to see it.”
