Ethan did not sleep that night.
Rachel found him sitting cross-legged on her bedroom floor, trying to tape the airplane wing back together.
The tape would not hold.
His lower lip trembled every time it fell apart again.
Rachel sat beside him.
“Sweetheart.”
He did not look up.
“It was for school.”
“I know.”
“Everyone else has a dad going.”
Rachel’s chest tightened.
She had known that part.
But hearing it in his small voice made the hallway crack open again.
“I was going to say you helped me,” Ethan whispered.
“Because you did the dad parts.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Ethan finally looked up.
“Is that stupid?”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“No, baby.”
“That is not stupid.”
He leaned into her, still holding the broken wing.
“I don’t want Jason to live here.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
There it was.
The sentence Daniel had forced her not to hear.
For years, she had tried to make the blended family work.
She had asked Ethan to be patient.
To share.
To forgive.
To understand Jason was older and hurting.
But Ethan was a child too.
And his hurt had been treated as smaller because he was kinder with it.
Rachel pulled him close.
“I should have protected you sooner.”
Ethan whispered, “You tried.”
That made it worse.
Downstairs, she heard Daniel talking to Jason.
His voice was low.
Jason’s was sharper.
Then a door slammed.
Rachel did not go down.
She stayed with Ethan until he slept.
At 1:13 a.m., Alyssa knocked softly.
Rachel opened the door.
Alyssa stood in the hall wearing the same gray dress, her face pale.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Rachel waited.
Alyssa’s eyes filled.
“I saw Jason take the plane.”
“I knew he was mad because Ethan got praised at school.”
“I should’ve stopped him.”
Rachel said nothing for a moment.
Then she asked, “Why didn’t you?”
Alyssa looked down.
“Because Jason turns on people.”
“And Dad always says not to make things worse.”
Rachel’s anger shifted.
Not away from Alyssa.
Toward the house.
Toward the pattern.
