Chapter 4

PART 4

That night, Rachel did not cook dinner.

It was the first thing everyone noticed.

Not the broken airplane.

Not Ethan’s red eyes.

Not the silence at the table.

Dinner.

Daniel opened the fridge and stared as if a meal might apologize for not appearing.

Jason stood behind him.

Alyssa sat on the couch, knees pulled to her chest.

Ethan stayed in Rachel’s room with the broken airplane pieces beside him.

Rachel came downstairs with her laptop and a folder.

Daniel turned.

“Can we talk privately?”

Rachel looked at the children.

“No.”

“They were present for the disrespect.”

“They can be present for the consequence.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Rachel.”

She opened the folder on the kitchen island.

Inside were printed bank statements.

Invoices.

Receipts.

Screenshots.

A full year of payments.

Jason’s baseball fees.

Alyssa’s therapy copays.

Daniel’s business loan bridge.

House repairs.

School fees.

Groceries.

Streaming accounts.

Car insurance.

Rachel placed each page down without drama.

Jason’s eyes widened.

Alyssa slowly stood and walked closer.

Daniel looked ashamed.

Not surprised.

Ashamed.

Rachel looked at him.

“You let them think you paid for everything.”

Daniel whispered, “I was embarrassed.”

Jason stared at him.

“You said you handled my camp.”

“I did.”

“With Rachel’s money,” Alyssa said softly.

Daniel flinched.

Rachel nodded.

“He handled asking me.”

Jason looked at Rachel.

For the first time that day, his smugness slipped into confusion.

But confusion was not remorse.

Not yet.

“You didn’t have to pay.”

Rachel’s voice was tired.

“I know.”

That answer landed harder than anger.

Daniel reached for one of the papers.

Rachel slid it away.

“No.”

“These copies are mine.”

“I am moving my money tonight.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the joint household card is frozen.”

“The automatic transfers stop Monday.”

“And tomorrow, I meet a lawyer.”

Jason stepped back.

Alyssa whispered, “Are you leaving?”

Rachel looked at Ethan’s closed bedroom door.

“I am deciding whether staying is still safe for my son.”

Daniel looked wounded.

Rachel did not soften.
