Chapter 8

PART 8

Daniel cried.

Quietly.

That surprised Rachel.

Daniel was not a loud man.

He was a disappearing man.

When things became hard, he became tired.

When Jason became cruel, Daniel became patient.

When Rachel asked for help, Daniel became overwhelmed.

But that night, looking at the separation plan, he did not disappear.

He sat on the couch with his head in his hands.

“I thought if I kept everyone calm, it would get better.”

Rachel sat across from him.

“You kept everyone comfortable except Ethan and me.”

He nodded.

The truth hurt.

Good.

It needed to.

“I didn’t want Jason to feel replaced.”

“So Ethan became disposable?”

Daniel looked up sharply.

Then the sharpness died.

Because he knew.

He had done exactly that.

“He lost his mother in the divorce,” Daniel whispered.

“Ethan lost his father to death.”

Rachel’s voice trembled.

“Why did Jason’s pain always matter more?”

Daniel had no answer.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Alyssa was listening.

Rachel did not stop.

“Your children did not need me to be their mother.”

“They needed you to be their father.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

“I know.”

“No.”

Rachel shook her head.

“You are beginning to know.”

That distinction broke him more than accusation.

The next morning, Daniel called a family therapist.

Then he called Jason’s coach and canceled the camp himself.

Then he told Jason he would be volunteering every Saturday at the community workshop to learn how to repair what he damaged.

Jason exploded.

Called Rachel manipulative.

Called Daniel weak.

Called Ethan a baby.

Daniel listened.

Then took Jason’s phone.

Jason stared as if the world had betrayed him.

Daniel said, “You are not being punished for emotion.”

“You are being held responsible for cruelty.”

Alyssa watched from the kitchen doorway.

Rachel saw something in her face.

Fear.

Relief.

Maybe both.

That afternoon, Alyssa came to Rachel with a small envelope.

Inside was twenty-seven dollars.

“All I have saved.”

Rachel frowned.

“For what?”

“For Ethan’s airplane.”

Rachel’s eyes softened.

“You did not break it.”

Alyssa looked toward the stairs.

“No.”

May you like

“But I watched.”
