Rain hammered the emergency entrance of St. Bartholomew’s Medical Center like the sky was trying to break the glass.
Ambulance lights flashed red and blue across the flooded pavement.
Elena Marlow stood beneath the canopy in soaked navy scrubs, dark hair pulled into a tight low bun, clutching a clear evidence bag against her chest.
Inside was her suspended employee badge.

“Then stop blocking the ambulances.”
She stepped around him before he could answer.
Inside the ER, frightened nurses and residents froze under the weight of arriving patients. Gurneys lined the hallway. Radios crackled. Someone shouted for a trauma bay that did not exist.
Elena raised one hand.
The room obeyed before anyone decided whether it should.
“Airway team to Bay Two. Bleeding control on the left. Walking wounded to secondary triage. Clear that hallway now.”
Dr. Aaron Cole stared at her, trembling.
Dr. Hale stood near the entrance, furious.
But the staff followed Elena.
Hours later, in the boardroom, Chairman James Whitaker looked around the table.
“Who saved the forty-seven trauma patients?”
Dr. Cole rose slowly.
“The nurse you suspended.”
Every face turned toward Dr. Hale.
Elena placed the sealed evidence bag on the table.
“I also preserved every altered log.”
Dr. Hale reached for the laptop.
