Chapter 9

Hale reached for the laptop.

It was instinct.

Control the screen.

Control the room.

Control the record.

Elena moved first.

She closed the laptop with one decisive motion.

The sound was quiet.

Final.

Hale froze with his hand above the table.

“Elena,” he said sharply.

She looked at him.

Not as a subordinate.

Not as a suspended employee.

As the nurse who had carried the truth through rain, triage, and fear.

“I also preserved every altered log.”

The sentence changed the air.

Cynthia’s face lost color.

Dr. Cole sat down slowly, as if his legs had stopped trusting him.

Whitaker’s eyes moved to the evidence bag.

Hospital counsel began writing.

Hale looked at the sealed badge.

The flash drive.

The printed log.

The evidence seal.

Recognition moved across his face before he could hide it.

Not recognition of the items.

Recognition of what they connected.

Badge access.

Medication logs.

Surveillance gaps.

Administrative edits.

Elena’s suspension.

Maybe more.

Much more.

The security officers stepped closer but did not touch anyone.

No arrest.

No license decision.

No final consequence.

Only presence.

Hale’s mouth opened.

For once, the perfect response did not arrive.

Elena kept her hand on the laptop lid.

“You framed me because you thought a nurse was easier to erase than a record.”

Whitaker turned toward Hale.

“Doctor?”

Hale looked at the evidence again.

And the fear finally reached his eyes.
