Chapter 5

Elena did not perform miracles.
She performed structure.
That was why people survived.
She divided the first wave before panic could multiply.
Red tags to trauma bays.
Yellow to monitored hallway stations.
Green to the secondary treatment area.
Family liaison to the waiting-room corridor.
One nurse assigned only to documentation flow.
One resident assigned only to reassessment.
No shouting without purpose.
No crowding around the most dramatic injury while quieter patients deteriorated unseen.
Dr. Cole followed her orders first, then began repeating them.
“Airway team to Bay Two.”
“Pressure dressing here.”
“Clear path for EMS.”
“Do not park gurneys in front of radiology.”
Elena moved through rainwater, bloodless fear, fluorescent light, and controlled chaos with the focus of someone who had done this too many times to need permission.
Hale tried once to override her.
“Cole, you answer to me.”
Dr. Cole froze.
Elena looked at him.
“Patient first.”
Cole swallowed.
Then turned back to the gurney.
“Bay Two is ready.”
Hale’s face hardened.
But by then, the machine was moving.
Nurses who had been afraid of Elena’s suspension now followed her because the patients in front of them left no time for hospital politics.
The forty-seventh crash victim arrived just before midnight.
By then, the ER was still overwhelmed, but no longer collapsing.
Elena finally stepped near the nurses’ station and removed the evidence bag from beneath her soaked jacket.
A police officer stood nearby taking incident notes.
Elena handed him the bag.
“Hold this under seal.”
He frowned.
“What is it?”
“My badge, a flash drive, and a medication-access log.”
Across the ER, Hale saw the exchange.

And Elena saw him see it.
