Chapter 7

Dr. Cole had never wanted to become a witness.

He wanted to become a good doctor.

That was all.

But St. Bartholomew’s had taught him quickly that medicine and survival were not always the same skill.

He had seen logs change.

He had heard residents warned not to question certain overrides.

He had watched Elena ask the questions everyone else avoided.

When she was suspended, Cole said nothing.

That silence followed him into every shift.

Then the crash happened.

And the suspended nurse did what the trauma chief should have done.

Now, in the boardroom, Cole felt Hale staring at him.

The same stare that had ended other careers.

But the night had changed something.

Forty-seven patients were alive because Elena walked through doors she had been told to stay outside of.

Cole could not hide behind fear after that.

Chairman Whitaker looked at him.

“Say it again.”

Cole swallowed.

“The nurse you suspended took command of triage, staffing flow, bay allocation, and documentation control.”

Hale scoffed.

“She interfered with hospital operations.”

Cole turned toward him.

“No. She restored them.”

Cynthia’s mouth tightened.

Elena did not look grateful.

She looked focused.

Gratitude was not the point.

Truth was.

Whitaker turned to Cynthia.

“Why was Nurse Marlow suspended?”

Cynthia opened a folder.

“Medication-access irregularities tied to her credentials.”

Elena placed both hands on the table.

“Those logs were altered.”

Hale leaned back.

“An accusation without foundation.”

Elena looked directly at him.

“No. An accusation with chain of custody.”

The security officers shifted slightly at the door.

Hale noticed.

And for the first time, his arrogance had to share space with calculation.
