Chapter 6

The evidence seal closed with a hard press.

Hours later, that same sound seemed to echo when a confidential folder landed on the boardroom table.

The emergency board meeting began at 2:37 a.m.

No one looked fully human under the neutral conference lights.

Doctors still wore scrubs.

Executives wore coats over rushed clothes.

Hospital counsel had three folders and no expression.

Security stood near the glass doors.

Elena stood at the head of the table in damp navy scrubs, exhausted but upright.

Her hair had partly dried, but rain still darkened the collar of her top.

Dr. Hale sat three seats away, arms folded.

Cynthia Voss sat beside him, face tight with controlled contempt.

Board Chairman James Whitaker entered last.

Silver hair.

Dark navy suit.

No greeting.

He placed one hand on the back of his chair and looked around the room.

“Forty-seven trauma patients came through our doors tonight.”

No one spoke.

“Forty-seven survived initial intake.”

Still no one spoke.

His eyes moved to Hale.

“I want one answer first.”

Hale straightened, already preparing the voice he used for donors.

Whitaker cut him off.

“Who saved the forty-seven trauma patients?”

The room went still.

Dr. Cole sat near the far end, pale, hands clasped so tightly his knuckles whitened.

He looked at Elena.

Then at Hale.

Then stood.

His voice trembled, but it carried.

“The nurse you suspended.”

No one moved.

Hale’s expression did not collapse yet.

But the first crack appeared.
