Chapter 13 - the name Brooke was almost given

Helen Vale requested to speak to Brooke directly.
Detective Cole allowed it with counsel and Laura present.
Brooke sat across from her hidden biological grandmother.
“You knew me my whole life.”
“Yes.”
“You watched Gary live in my house.”
Helen’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know how bad it became.”
“You knew who he was.”
“Yes.”
“Then that’s enough.”
Helen accepted it.
Brooke asked:
“What legal identity?”
Helen opened an old file.
When Brooke was three, Eleanor Vale drafted a private adoption petition.
Proposed adoptive parent:
Helen Vale.
Brooke stared.
“You were going to take me from my parents?”
Helen shook her head.
“Eleanor was.”
“Why?”
“She wanted David tied to the Vale family publicly.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if Brooke becomes a Vale.”
Eleanor wanted David to stop investigating the redevelopment network.
In exchange, she offered:
Family recognition.
Money.
Protection.
A major inheritance for Brooke.
David refused.
Then Eleanor considered using Helen to adopt Brooke through claims that David and Laura were unstable.
Helen refused.
Brooke stared at her.
“You stopped it?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you keep working with her?”
Helen looked ashamed.
“Because she was my mother.”
Brooke almost laughed.
“That is everyone’s excuse.”
Helen nodded.
“I know.”
The file contained a proposed new name:
Brooke Eleanor Vale.
Brooke felt physically ill.
A life someone else had planned.
Without consent.
Without need.
Not rescue.
Control.
David discovered the draft.
That was when he stopped treating the housing corruption as merely financial.
He realized Eleanor would use children.
His own child included.
He began secretly copying everything.
Michael Trent joined him.
That eventually led to the crash.
Brooke whispered:
“So Dad disappeared because Grandma Eleanor tried to take me.”
“Partly.”
“What else?”
Helen hesitated.
“David found something about Ethan.”
Laura looked up sharply.
“What?”
Helen turned toward her.
“I don’t know if you know.”
Laura’s face drained.
“Know what?”
Helen opened another document.
A prenatal financial agreement.
Signed before Ethan was born.
Eleanor created a trust for:
SECOND BENNETT MALE CHILD.
Brooke frowned.
“Why?”
Helen did not answer immediately.
Daniel did.
“David and Laura didn’t know Ethan would be a boy until late pregnancy.”
Correct.
Yet the trust was dated months earlier.
Maybe Eleanor had medical access.
But the phrase SECOND BENNETT MALE CHILD was stranger.
Brooke was female.
Ethan was the first male child of David and Laura.
Unless Eleanor was counting someone else.
Daniel looked toward Helen.
“David had another son?”
Helen shook her head.
“Not David.”
Laura whispered:
“Christopher.”
Everyone froze.
Laura’s first marriage.
She had been pregnant once.
Before Brooke.
She lost the pregnancy at approximately five months.
At least that was what doctors told her.
Brooke stared.
“Mom?”
Laura began crying.
“I had a boy.”
“Before Dad?”
“Yes.”
“Did he die?”
“I thought so.”
Helen closed her eyes.
Brooke understood before anyone spoke.
“No.”
Helen whispered:
“I don’t know.”
Eleanor’s documents referred to:
FIRST BENNETT-LINE MALE CHILD — PLACED.
Laura frowned.
“Bennett line?”
Christopher was not Bennett.
But Laura’s maiden name before marriage had been Bennett too?
No.
She was Laura Davis.
So why call her first baby Bennett-line?
Helen explained:
Because David Bennett was the biological father.
Silence exploded.
Laura stood.
“That’s impossible.”
“Is it?”
“I was married to Christopher.”
“David knew you before Christopher?”
Laura shook her head.
“No.”
Then memory.
A charity event.
One night before her wedding.
David had repaired an electrical problem at the venue.
They spoke for ten minutes.
Nothing more.
Helen said:
“Eleanor believed David was the father.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
Laura looked horrified.
“There was no affair.”
Helen nodded.
“I believe you.”
Then the paperwork became more disturbing.
Hospital records from Laura’s lost pregnancy had been altered.
The father field changed.
Specimen records mislabeled.
The file did not prove David was the father.
It proved Eleanor wanted someone to believe he was.
Why?
To create leverage.
To bind Laura to David?
Or to manufacture a family claim?
Brooke felt sick.
Then Detective Cole entered.
“We found David.”
Everyone stood.
Brooke’s heart stopped.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“A private clinic outside Cincinnati.”
“Can I see him?”
Detective Cole hesitated.
“He’s unconscious.”
Brooke’s knees nearly gave out.
“What happened?”
“He was admitted under another name five weeks ago.”
The day after the Dayton meeting.
“Who admitted him?”
“A woman.”
Helen whispered:
“Me.”
Brooke turned.
“You knew where he was?”
Helen began crying.
“He collapsed after leaving the restaurant.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because Thomas was watching.”
“You hid my father for five weeks?”
“I thought I was keeping him alive.”
Brooke’s anger shook her whole body.
“Everybody thinks hiding people is protection!”
Helen had taken David to a private clinic.
He suffered head trauma after someone attacked him outside the restaurant.
She feared Thomas.
Christopher.
The Vale remnants.
So she used an alias.
David had not disappeared willingly this time.
Someone had tried to stop him from coming home.
And according to clinic records, he had briefly regained consciousness two days earlier.
He recorded one message.
The hidden phone in Brooke’s kitchen.
He had somehow arranged for it to be delivered through a nurse.
“If Brooke finds this before I get home…”
Brooke covered her mouth.
He had been trying.
This time, he had been trying.
Then Detective Cole added:
“David said one name before losing consciousness again.”
“What name?”
“Christopher.”
Laura stared.
Her first husband.
Alive.
David had seen him.
May you like
And apparently Christopher had been close enough to attack him.
👉 David was finally found alive, but his last conscious word was the name of Laura’s supposedly dead first husband—the man who may still be controlling the family from the shadows.
