Chapter 8 - Laura’s first husband
Laura looked at Brooke and said:
“I was married before David.”
Brooke stared.
“What?”
“For eleven months.”
“To who?”
“A man named Christopher Hale.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
“What?”
Laura looked at him.
“You know the name?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Christopher Hale worked with Thomas Reed.”
Brooke felt cold.
“Did Dad know?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t I?”
“You were born years later.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Laura nodded.
“No. It isn’t.”
Christopher had been charming.

Laura married him at twenty-one.

“Did Christopher know Dad?”
“Not that I knew.”
Daniel corrected:
“He did.”
Thomas Reed handled some of Christopher’s property deals.
One company tied to Christopher later became Midwest Community Renewal.
The same company buying foster properties.
Brooke stared.
“So this started before Mom met Dad.”
Yes.
David may have entered the scheme through Laura accidentally.
He discovered during Ohio Heritage audits that shell-company names matched accounts from Laura’s first marriage.
That was why he began investigating more deeply.
Evelyn Bennett knew pieces.
She had warned David:

“Christopher contacted me after David’s funeral.”
Brooke almost screamed.
“Of course he did.”

“For what?”

“Did Gary know?”
“Yes.”
“Was Gary working for Christopher?”
“I think so.”
Daniel whispered:
“Gary may have been managing you for him.”
Brooke felt nauseated.

Control.
Access to David’s evidence.
Detective Cole located Christopher Hale.
Officially, he died in Mexico nine years earlier.
Brooke laughed bitterly.
“Another dead man?”
Nobody found it funny.
Death certificate only.
No U.S. remains.
No independent verification.
The family was beginning to treat paperwork as a suggestion.
Grandma Evelyn remained missing.
Her assisted-living room contained one hidden item.
A cassette tape.
David’s voice.
Recorded seven years ago.
“Evelyn, if something happens, tell Brooke when she’s old enough that Laura did not betray me.”
Laura started crying.
Brooke looked at her.
David continued:
“She was used before she met me.”
Then:
“Christopher Hale created the first accounts in her name.”
Brooke felt a small piece of anger toward Laura shift.
Not disappear.
Shift.
David:
“Gary is trying to make her believe she belongs to the same conspiracy.”
Laura covered her face.
He had understood.
Then the tape became more disturbing.
“If Christopher is alive, Thomas Reed knows.”
Daniel whispered:
“My stepfather.”
David:
“Thomas protected Christopher’s companies.”
“And if Thomas is protecting him, Daniel cannot know until I have proof.”
Daniel stared.
David had intentionally hidden Thomas’s role from his own brother.
Because Daniel loved the man who raised him.
The tape ended:
“Brooke saw the green ledger once. She doesn’t know what she saw. Keep it that way until I come home.”
Brooke laughed through tears.
“He never came home.”
No one corrected her.
Then Detective Cole received a call.
Grandma Evelyn had been found.
Alive.
At a bus terminal.
Confused.
No serious injury.
She claimed a man told her Brooke had been hospitalized and offered to drive her.
When she realized they were going the wrong direction, she demanded to get out.
The man obeyed.
Why kidnap someone only to release her?
Evelyn gave the answer.
“He wanted my key.”
“What key?”
“The old house key.”
Brooke frowned.
Their old house?
Before the suburban kitchen home, the Bennetts had lived in a smaller house in Grove City.
Sold after David’s death.
Evelyn still kept a key because the house had once belonged to her parents.
Current owner:
A holding company.
Midwest Community Renewal.
Detective Cole stared.
The conspiracy had bought the Bennett family’s old home after David disappeared.
Why?
Evelyn whispered:
“Because David hid something there before Brooke was born.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
Then she looked at Laura.
“Christopher knew.”
Brooke turned.
Her mother whispered:
“My first husband lived in that house with me.”
