Chapter 7 - what Daniel never told David

Police moved Brooke and Ethan immediately.

No relatives.

No known family homes.

A secure temporary location.

Ethan thought it was a hotel.

Brooke knew better.

Daniel was furious about the photograph.

Detective Cole was furious at Daniel.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“Nothing relevant.”

“Someone threatens these children through you.”

“I know.”

“Gary thinks you have authority over them.”

“Yes.”

“You called them your children.”

Daniel looked away.

Brooke had waited long enough.

“Tell me now.”

Daniel stared at her.

Laura sat nearby.

She knew.

Brooke saw it.

“Oh my God.”

Daniel inhaled.

“David and I were brothers.”

Brooke frowned.

“You said coworkers.”

“We were both.”

“Brothers how?”

“Half brothers.”

Silence.

“Dad never told us.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Their father, Samuel Reed, had an affair with David’s mother.

David grew up under the Bennett surname.

Daniel grew up as Reed.

They discovered the relationship as adults.

They became close.

Almost immediately.

Brooke processed.

“So Uncle Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Why hide that?”

“David asked me to.”

“Of course he did.”

Daniel accepted the criticism.

But that still did not explain “my children.”

Daniel continued.

“Before David disappeared, he signed temporary guardianship papers.”

“We know.”

“Then he changed them.”

Brooke stared.

“To what?”

“To make me co-guardian with Laura if he died.”

Laura closed her eyes.

Brooke looked at her.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And Gary?”

“He found a draft.”

That explained why Gary feared Daniel.

If Laura were deemed unable to protect Brooke and Ethan, Daniel could petition for custody under David’s planning documents.

Gary’s control of the household could disappear.

Brooke asked:

“Why didn’t you come get us when Gary started hurting Ethan?”

Daniel’s face broke.

“Because I didn’t know.”

“Mom knew.”

Laura whispered:

“I hid it.”

“Why?”

“Gary said if Daniel came near you, David would die.”

Brooke looked toward Daniel.

“Is Dad alive right now?”

Daniel swallowed.

“I believe so.”

“Where?”

“I haven’t spoken to him in six weeks.”

“What happened six weeks ago?”

“David said he was coming home.”

Brooke’s heart slammed.

“He finally decided?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he found the green ledger.”

Everyone froze.

“But Mom gave it away four years ago.”

“David found the man who took it.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Thomas Reed.”

Brooke frowned.

“Another Reed?”

Daniel nodded.

“My father.”

Brooke stared.

“Your father is alive?”

“He’s seventy-three.”

“Did he take the ledger?”

“David believed so.”

Laura looked stunned.

“Samuel?”

“No. Thomas was my stepfather. Different man.”

The family web became confusing, but the important fact was simple:

Thomas Reed knew David and Daniel.

He knew the emergency phrase.

He could impersonate Daniel to Laura.

And he had worked as property attorney for Midwest Community Renewal.

The company that bought the allegedly manipulated foster properties.

Daniel whispered:

“I never knew.”

Detective Cole said:

“David did.”

Six weeks earlier, David called Daniel.

He had traced the green ledger to Thomas.

He said Thomas was connected to the top of the property scheme.

Then David disappeared again.

Brooke stared.

“Did you report him missing?”

“He told me not to.”

Brooke laughed with disbelief.

“You men are obsessed with not calling police.”

Detective Cole looked almost offended on her behalf.

Daniel nodded.

“You’re right.”

Finally.

Brooke asked:

“Why would Thomas photograph us?”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“If he knows David is coming back, you’re leverage.”

Ethan looked up.

“What’s leverage?”

Brooke quickly said:

“Something adults shouldn’t use children as.”

Daniel agreed.

Detective Cole traced the threatening image.

Taken with a camera connected to a rental vehicle.

The car was found abandoned.

Inside:

A grocery receipt.

A motel key.

And one child’s green crayon.

Brooke stared at it.

Same brand Ethan had been using.

Ethan checked his box.

One green crayon missing.

Someone had entered Aunt Karen’s house.

Not just watched from outside.

Detective Cole searched security footage.

At 3:12 a.m., a man used the back door.

He knew the code.

Only family knew it.

Aunt Karen.

Laura.

Brooke.

Gary once knew the old code, but it had changed.

Daniel never knew it.

One other person had it.

Laura’s mother.

Grandma Evelyn Bennett.

Brooke frowned.

“Grandma is eighty.”

“And in assisted living,” Laura said.

But Evelyn’s old caregiver sometimes helped with family errands.

Name:

Mark Holloway.

Detective Cole searched him.

Former employee of Midwest Community Renewal.

Brooke whispered:

“Another connection.”

Yes.

The watchers were not random.

The scheme had roots in people the family trusted.

Then Ethan asked:

“Is Grandma safe?”

Nobody answered quickly enough.

Police called the assisted-living facility.

Evelyn Bennett was missing.

Her bed had been empty since morning.

No staff member knew when she left.

On her pillow lay a folded note.

For Brooke.

Detective Cole read it over the phone:

BROOKE, YOUR FATHER DID NOT DIE BECAUSE OF MONEY.

HE DISAPPEARED BECAUSE OF WHAT I TOLD HIM ABOUT YOUR MOTHER.

Brooke slowly turned toward Laura.

Laura’s face went completely white.

👉 Grandma Evelyn vanished after leaving a note claiming David’s disappearance was tied not only to Gary’s fraud—but to a secret about Laura herself.
