Chapter 3 - the father who died twice

Brooke remembered David Bennett’s funeral.
She had been ten.
Rain.
Gray umbrellas.
A coffin she was not allowed to touch.
Laura gripping her hand.
Ethan only two years old, sleeping against an aunt’s shoulder.
Everyone said David died after his pickup truck went through a guardrail on a mountain road in West Virginia.
The vehicle burned.
Identification came from dental records.
Brooke had believed it for seven years.
Now Detective Maria Cole sat across from her at the kitchen table and said:
“The remains buried under your father’s name may need to be reexamined.”
Brooke stared.
“So whose funeral did I attend?”
“We don’t know.”
“And Daniel?”
Detective Cole glanced toward the living room.
“He’s agreed to speak.”
“Then let him.”
Daniel entered.
Laura stayed upstairs with a child-services worker and Ethan.
Brooke refused to leave.
Daniel sat.
“You knew my father.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“We worked together.”
“Doing what?”
“Construction.”
Brooke almost laughed.
“My dad repaired heating systems.”
“He did after he left our company.”
“What company?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Ohio Heritage Renovation.”
Brooke knew the name.
They restored old homes around Columbus.
Gary worked for them.
Her stomach tightened.
“Gary knew Dad?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Long before your mother met him.”
Brooke’s anger became colder.
“Mom said Gary came into our lives after Dad died.”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“That isn’t true.”
Brooke stood.
“What else isn’t true?”
Detective Cole asked her to sit.
She did only because Ethan was upstairs.
Daniel explained.
David, Daniel, and Gary had worked on a government-funded housing restoration project eight years earlier.
During the project, David discovered false invoices.
Materials billed but never installed.
Subcontractors that did not exist.
Money disappearing through shell companies.
Brooke frowned.
“How much?”
“Millions.”
“And Gary?”
“David believed he was involved.”
“What did Dad do?”
“Copied records.”
“Then died?”
Daniel nodded grimly.
“The crash happened four days before he was supposed to meet a federal investigator.”
Brooke stared.
“So Dad survived.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He wasn’t driving.”
“What?”
David had switched vehicles that morning with a coworker named Michael Trent.
Michael took David’s truck.
The brakes failed.
The truck crashed and burned.
Michael died.
Everyone assumed the body was David because his wallet and work phone remained inside.
Brooke covered her mouth.
“Dad let us bury Michael?”
Daniel looked away.
“At first, David was unconscious in a clinic under another name.”
“Then?”
“When he woke up, he realized the crash may have been intended for him.”
“So he disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“For seven years?”
“It was supposed to be weeks.”
Brooke laughed.
Nobody else did.
“What happened?”
“David learned people were watching your house.”
“Gary?”
“We didn’t know then.”
Daniel and David went into hiding while trying to identify everyone connected to the fraud.
David refused to come home until he knew Laura and the children were safe.
Brooke’s eyes filled.
“He decided we were safer without a father?”
Daniel whispered:
“He regretted that every day.”
“That doesn’t give me seven years back.”
“No.”
Good.
At least Daniel did not defend it.
Brooke asked:
“Why did Mom say he was dead?”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“That part you need to ask her.”
“Why did you call us your children?”
Daniel looked down.
A pause.
Too long.
Brooke noticed.
“You’re hiding something else.”
“I made David a promise.”
“Stop keeping dead-man promises.”
Daniel looked at her.
“David isn’t dead.”
“Then stop keeping missing-man promises.”
Detective Cole almost smiled.
Daniel did not.
Finally he said:
“When your father disappeared, he asked me to protect you if anything happened.”
“That does not make us your children.”
“No.”
“So why say it?”
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
“Because Gary understands that phrase differently.”
Brooke frowned.
“How?”
“Gary thinks I have legal authority over you.”
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because David left documents naming me emergency guardian if Laura became unable to protect you.”
Brooke stared.
“Dad didn’t trust Mom?”
Daniel said nothing.
That silence hurt.
Then Detective Cole received a message.
She looked down.
“Brooke, the medical examiner pulled your father’s original death file.”
“And?”
“There’s a problem with the dental identification.”
“What problem?”
“The dentist who certified it…”
She looked toward Daniel.
“Was Gary Miller’s brother.”
Brooke’s stomach dropped.
Gary’s brother, Dr. Stephen Miller, had officially confirmed the burned body as David Bennett.
