Chapter 4 - why Laura married Gary
Laura did not ask Brooke to forgive her.
That helped.
They sat in Brooke’s bedroom while Ethan slept in the next room with the door open.
“I knew Gary before your father died.”
Brooke stared.
“How?”
“David introduced us once.”
“You married the man Dad suspected of stealing millions?”
“I didn’t know that part.”
“When did Gary come back?”
“Six months after the funeral.”
“And you just happened to fall in love?”
Laura closed her eyes.
“No.”
Brooke felt cold.
“Then why marry him?”
“Because he knew David was alive.”
Silence.
“What?”
“He came to me with a photograph.”
“Of Dad?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you call police?”
“He said if I did, David would disappear permanently.”
Brooke stared.
“And you believed him?”
“He knew things.”
“What things?”
“He knew where David had been hiding. He knew Daniel’s name. He knew about the federal investigation.”
Brooke stood.
“So Gary blackmailed you into marrying him?”
Laura shook her head.
“Not at first.”
That answer was worse.
“He started by pretending he wanted to help.”
Laura had been grieving.
Poor.
Trying to raise two children alone.
Gary brought groceries.
Fixed the furnace.
Drove Ethan to appointments.
Sat beside Laura when she cried.
He became useful.
Then trusted.
Then controlling.
Months after moving in, he revealed he knew David was alive.
“He told me David had abandoned us.”
“Did you believe him?”
“For a while.”
“Did Dad contact you?”
Laura looked down.
“Once.”
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
Brooke’s heart slammed.
“What did he say?”
“That Gary was dangerous.”
“And you stayed.”
Laura started crying.
“I was afraid.”
“Of Gary?”
“Yes.”
“Of Dad?”
“No.”
“Then why not leave?”
“He had evidence that made it look like I helped hide company money.”
Brooke stared.
“Did you?”
“I signed papers I didn’t understand.”
Gary used Laura’s name on a small business account.
She thought it paid household bills.
Actually it received transfers from one of the shell companies David had been investigating.
If Laura went to police, Gary threatened to make her look like part of the fraud.
“And Ethan?”
Laura’s voice broke.
“Gary started using him against me.”
Brooke looked toward the hallway.
“How long has he been hitting Ethan?”
“Not like today.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Laura covered her face.
Brooke’s voice became quiet.
“How long?”
“Months.”
Brooke stepped backward.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You stood there.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you protect him?”
“I kept thinking I could get us out safely.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
Brooke wanted to scream.
Instead she whispered:
“Then you weren’t protecting us.”
Laura cried.
“No.”
It was the first truly honest answer.
Detective Cole later interviewed Laura formally.
She surrendered hidden bank records.
Texts.
Audio recordings.
She had secretly begun documenting Gary three months earlier.
One recording:
GARY: David should have stayed dead.
LAURA: Where is he?
GARY: Not your concern.
LAURA: He’s their father.
GARY: I’m the one raising them.
LAURA: You terrify Ethan.
GARY: Fear works.
Brooke had to stop listening.
Another recording concerned the pantry.
LAURA: What are you looking for?
GARY: David hid something in this house.
LAURA: He hasn’t lived here in seven years.
GARY: He came back.
Laura’s voice sharpened.
“When?”
Gary refused to answer.
That meant David had entered the house recently.
Perhaps to place the red box.
Perhaps two days ago.
The hidden phone recording suggested so.
Then investigators found something inside the green paint container Ethan had spilled.
Not hidden.
Printed on the bottom in permanent marker.
B-17.
Laura stared.
“David used to label work samples that way.”
Detective Cole frowned.
“What does B-17 mean?”
“I don’t know.”
Ethan did.
“Basement seventeen.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Where did you hear that?” Brooke asked.
“Gary said it on the phone.”
“What exactly?”
Ethan tried to remember.
“Something like, ‘B-seventeen is still under the house.’”
Brooke looked down.
Their suburban house had only one basement.
No numbered rooms.
Daniel, however, recognized the code.
“Building 17.”
“Where?”
“The old Ohio Heritage warehouse.”
The company where David, Gary, and Daniel once worked.
It had been abandoned after a fire six years earlier.
Detective Cole asked:
“What was in the basement?”
Daniel’s face changed.
“The original project files.”
Gary may have moved into Laura’s house not only to control the family.
He may have been searching for a clue David left behind about Building 17.
