He did not tell Savannah to make contact.
He expected a deputy to intervene.
He did not know Bennett trained her against a dummy.
He did not know she would wear a hard heel.
He did not know Lucy had been conceived with Adrian’s genetic material.
Each statement was partly supported.
The prosecution asked what Marcus did know.
He knew Savannah would move aggressively toward his pregnant wife.
He signed the false psychiatric hold.
He approved the undisclosed embryo transfer.
He installed the wedding-ring transmitter.
He discussed fetal death as an advantage.
He helped prepare an emergency custody claim.
He allowed Eleanor authority over Emily’s reproductive care.
He protected Savannah after the kick.
Marcus testified against advice.
“I loved Emily.”
Claire, serving now as a witness rather than his opposing attorney, answered during cross-examination:
“Did love make you remove the transmitter?”
“No.”
“Tell her about the embryo?”
“No.”
“Stop the staged confrontation?”
“No.”
“Step toward her after Savannah struck?”
“No.”
“What did love change?”
Marcus looked toward Emily.
“It made me hesitate.”
“Hesitation occurred inside you. She experienced your choices.”
Vale Industries entered evidence because its hidden debt motivated Marcus. He had pledged company shares to Richard’s old creditors. If Emily’s Covenant activated, Marcus believed he could stabilize the corporation and preserve thousands of jobs.
Employees testified that collapse would harm families.
The receiver then showed Marcus diverted millions into personal aircraft, gifts for Savannah, and a private island account.
Institutional survival had not been his only motive.
Even where jobs were threatened, Marcus had no right to use Emily’s body as financing.
The jury convicted him of conspiracy, reproductive fraud, aggravated endangerment, forged medical filings, unlawful surveillance, attempted custody fraud, financial crimes, and obstruction.
He was acquitted of personally directing the completed kick and of attempted fetal homicide. The evidence did not meet those standards.
Different verdicts preserved accuracy.
At sentencing, Adrian spoke.
“You spent twelve years believing I was dead.”
Marcus looked toward him.
“Yes.”
“You found my letters.”
“Yes.”
“You gave them to investigators only after learning Lucy was genetically mine.”
“Yes.”
“You were used by Mother.”
“Yes.”
“You also became Father’s method.”
“Yes.”
The brothers did not embrace.
Marcus received a lengthy prison sentence. His cooperation, surrender of Covenant rights, and guilty admissions after exposure reduced some counts. His leadership, wealth, planning, and violation of marriage increased others.
The court ordered restitution without transferring every corporate loss to Emily.
Vale Industries was restructured. Employees received board representation. Fraudulent debt was separated from legitimate operations. Marcus lost controlling shares and executive authority.
The company survived smaller.
His name remained on buildings only where independent boards chose not to spend charitable funds removing letters immediately. Later, several were renamed through ordinary votes.
Emily’s divorce judgment recognized reproductive abuse, financial coercion, and endangerment. She received compensation and property tied to lawful marital claims.
She did not receive Lucy’s genetic father’s inheritance.
Adrian remained alive.
Eleanor’s estate remained frozen.
Marcus asked that his unused nursery paintings be returned from the penthouse. The receiver found they had been purchased with personal funds.
He received them in prison storage.
Emily kept none.
Years later, Marcus requested permission to send Lucy a letter explaining that he once expected to be her father.
Emily declined while Lucy was a child.
At eighteen, Lucy could decide whether to receive it.
Marcus’s remorse did not create access before then.
Savannah learned his sentence through the prison news service.
She wrote no message.
Their affair had contained attraction, ambition, manipulation, and moments they each called love. Neither needed the other to validate a changed identity afterward.
Before Marcus was transferred, investigators asked one final question.
Who installed the transmitter inside Emily’s wedding ring?
Marcus answered:
“My mother gave the ring to Bennett’s jeweler. Laura supplied the biometric design.”
Emily stared at the transcript.
Laura had not merely chosen where she met Marcus or ordered the courtroom movement.
