Chapter 6 - The Daughter Laura Chose to MeetThe photograph had been taken inside St. Catherine’s private neurological wing.
The hospital denied Laura was a patient.
Thomas arrived with federal investigators and a warrant.
Room 804 existed on the building plans but not in the public directory. The elevator required an administrator key registered to Dr. Alan Cole.
Inside the hidden room, officers found an empty bed, medication vials, and restraints attached beneath the mattress.
Laura had been held there recently.
Savannah had visited four times.
Security footage showed her entering alone and leaving in tears.
She did not appear to be guarding Laura.
She appeared to be speaking with her.
Bennett denied knowledge.
Savannah refused to answer questions without immunity.
Marcus accused her of betraying him.
The alliance around the courtroom assault began breaking.
Claire negotiated a recorded interview with Savannah in exchange for protection from Bennett—not immunity from prosecution.
Savannah entered wearing gray hospital scrubs because investigators had collected her white outfit and shoes as evidence.
Without the carefully selected clothing, she looked younger.
She also looked frightened.
“Laura contacted me six months ago,” she said.
“Why you?” Claire asked.
“She said my mother was alive.”
Miriam Cole had not abandoned Savannah.
Bennett placed her inside a psychiatric institution after she threatened to expose Hollow Crown. Laura helped her escape shortly before the car explosion.
Both women disappeared into the same protection network.
Savannah grew up believing Miriam chose freedom over motherhood.
Bennett reinforced the story.
Laura later learned Savannah was working for Marcus and tried to warn her.
“She told me Emily was the only person who could open the Covenant archive,” Savannah said. “She said Marcus would kill her after the baby was born.”
“You kicked her anyway,” Claire replied.
Savannah’s eyes filled.
“Bennett said the strike would expose Marcus. He told me Emily wore a fetal monitor and deputies would intervene.”
“You pointed a heel at a pregnant woman.”
“Yes.”
“You laughed.”
“I was trying to make Marcus believe I was still with him.”
“Emily heard the laugh. The baby experienced the kick. Your secret purpose does not change either.”
Savannah lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
She had agreed to frighten Emily because Bennett promised to reveal Miriam’s location. He also promised Marcus would be recorded admitting the trust motive.
But Bennett blocked the deputy and minimized the attack.
He was not trying to expose Marcus.
He was protecting the plan.
Savannah realized too late that she had been used as the visible aggressor.
“Where is Laura now?” Thomas asked through the observation glass.
Savannah looked toward him.
“She said she would go where the first Whitmore child was hidden.”
Thomas’s face changed.
Laura gave birth once before Emily.
A baby girl was delivered when Laura was seventeen and unmarried. Her father forced a private adoption to protect the Whitmore family’s political reputation.
Thomas knew only fragments.
Laura spent years trying to find the child.
That search led her to Hollow Crown.
Bennett’s files referred to a missing Whitmore daughter.
Perhaps the Covenant was created for the first child, not Emily.
Emily asked Savannah whether Laura believed she was that daughter.
Savannah shook her head.
“She said I was connected, but not the way Bennett claimed.”
“What does that mean?”
“She wouldn’t tell me until I brought you.”
Savannah gave Claire a storage key.
Laura hid evidence inside a courthouse archive before disappearing from St. Catherine’s.
The box contained prenatal records, photographs of Miriam, and a letter addressed to Emily.
My dearest daughter, Thomas protected you from the men who wanted your trust, but I protected someone else from Thomas.
Emily read the line again.
“From Dad?”
Thomas went pale.
Laura’s letter continued.
He does not know what happened after the first birth. He must not learn until both daughters stand together.
The final page was missing.
Savannah removed it before surrendering the key.
Claire noticed the torn edge.
“What did you take?”
Savannah looked directly at Emily.
“A name.”
“Whose?”
Savannah’s lips trembled.
