Chapter 13 - The relatives start calling

The command at the party had triggered confusion because several relatives were financially linked to Daniel’s projects.

His brother Matthew had guaranteed $750,000 of a smaller bridge facility.

Uncle Peter owned minority equity in one apartment redevelopment.

Cousin Jonathan invested through a family LLC.

Daniel had presented himself as the family’s financial center.

That position weakened once his refinancing failed.

Not because I sabotaged it.

Because the lender’s proposed collateral support never materialized.

Within forty-eight hours, the lender formally withdrew the term sheet.

Daniel blamed me.

His email:

You destroyed the hotel to prove a point.

I replied before Rebecca could stop me.

Your project needed my house because your numbers did not work. That is not me destroying it.

Accurate.

Still unhelpful.

Rebecca called.

“Stop litigating by email.”

“I hate you.”

“Billable.”

Daniel obtained another private-credit proposal at a much higher rate.

Then an outside equity investor offered rescue capital in exchange for a large ownership share.

He rejected it initially.

Pride.

Eventually he would have to choose.

That business pressure made him more aggressive legally.

It also made his family more desperate for me to:

“Be reasonable.”

Reasonable meant:

May you like

Put Bellweather at risk so Daniel would not be diluted.

I declined.
