Chapter 20 - The assault resolution

Daniel’s criminal case resolved before the divorce.
He accepted responsibility for misdemeanor domestic assault.
No attempt to minimize it as:
inappropriate contact
in the final plea.
He admitted one intentional slap.
No prior record.
Minor documented injury.
No further physical violence.
He received:
Probation.
Domestic-violence intervention programming.
Community service.
A suspended jail component conditioned on compliance.
No sensational prison term.
The wrist grab was considered in the broader record but not separately inflated into kidnapping or false imprisonment.
I gave a victim-impact statement.
Short.
I said:
“The slap mattered. What mattered more was that he believed my refusal entitled him to punish me.”
I did not ask for maximum punishment.
I asked for the record to say what happened.
It did.
Evelyn attended sentencing.
Sat behind Daniel.
Did not look at me.
Afterward, she approached Rebecca rather than me.
“May I send Emily a letter?”
Rebecca looked at me.
May you like
I nodded.
That was all.
