Chapter 21 - Evelyn’s apology

The letter arrived a week later.
Six pages.
Too long.
Very Evelyn.
The useful part began on page three.
I watched Daniel slap you and I smiled.
There.
I stopped.
Then continued.
I smiled because I believed you had finally pushed him far enough that someone was forcing you to stop.
Painful.
Specific.
That belief was wrong.
Good.
I told you to leave the jewelry and car because I thought Daniel paid for everything around you. I now know that was false.
Then:
I accepted forty-eight monthly payments from your account while believing my son was providing them. I should have asked questions once I realized the numbers did not match his ordinary cash flow. I did not because the story made me proud of him.
That mattered.
Then:
Even if Daniel had paid for everything, he still would not have owned the right to strike you.
That was the most important sentence.
Not:
You were rich too.
Not:
Actually you owned the mansion.
Wealth did not create my right not to be hit.
It existed already.
Evelyn finished:
I am sorry I protected my son’s pride before your safety.
I replied:
I received your letter. Thank you for stating your conduct accurately.
May you like
No allowance resumed.
Apology was not payroll.
