Chapter 10 - The River ExitThomas Reed saw the Halcyon guards before they saw him.

He stopped the group inside the tunnel and raised one hand.

Emma stood beside Mrs. Bell. Nora supported Martin, whose face had become gray from blood loss.

Rainwater rushed around their ankles.

The tunnel opened fifty feet ahead near the riverbank. Two men waited beneath the trees. A black van stood beyond them.

Thomas whispered, “We turn back.”

Nora looked toward the smoke entering behind them.

“The mansion route is closing.”

Martin leaned against the wall.

“There is another outlet.”

“Where?”

“Behind the old boathouse.”

“How do you know?”

“Vivian and I used it five years ago.”

Emma looked at him.

“The night Mommy died?”

Martin lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Nora stared.

“You were there too.”

“I stayed near the river. Vivian entered the house. Kline’s team brought someone out wrapped in a medical blanket.”

“Catherine?”

“I never saw the face.”

They followed Martin toward a side branch almost hidden behind storm debris.

Thomas sent a coded text to Alexander, but the signal failed underground.

At the mansion, Alexander saw the guards approaching Emma through a thermal feed.

Lena’s wrist device waited for the final fear sample.

He held Catherine’s identity core in one hand.

Vivian stood beside the open server case.

“Destroy it,” she said.

Lena laughed.

“If he destroys it, hospitals lose authentication. Emergency medications lock. Financial accounts freeze. His companies collapse.”

Alexander knew the damage would be temporary but severe.

“Disconnect your transfer.”

“No.”

“Then you lose the system.”

“You will not hurt millions to protect one child.”

Alexander looked at the screen showing Emma inside the tunnel.

“You built your life on believing parents can be forced to sacrifice their children for everyone else.”

Lena’s confidence weakened slightly.

He placed the drive against the edge of the burning piano.

“Try me.”

Lena activated her communicator.

“River team, force the girl to speak.”

No response came.

Thomas had already led Emma into the side branch.

Lena checked another screen.

The thermal image disappeared.

Vivian used the distraction to rip the biometric module from Lena’s wrist.

The older woman struck her, but Vivian held on.

The device fell.

Alexander crushed it beneath his boot.

The guardianship upload stopped at ninety-eight percent.

Lena stared at the broken unit.

“You have no idea what you interrupted.”

Kline appeared in the ballroom doorway holding the black leather medical bag.

He had escaped during the smoke.

“Lena, we have to leave.”

She looked at him with contempt.

“You failed Catherine. You failed Emma. Why would I take you?”

Kline’s face changed.

He opened the bag.

Inside were blood samples, biometric scanners, and a small tablet connected to a live file.

“I completed the sample at the clinic.”

Vivian went pale.

“You said it was incomplete.”

“I lied.”

Kline activated the tablet.

Emma’s guardianship transfer reached one hundred percent.

The server announced provisional control granted to Halcyon Family Services.

Alexander felt the room drop beneath him.

Lena smiled.

“Thank you, doctor.”

Then Kline changed the designated guardian.

Not Vivian.

Not Lena.

The screen displayed:

CATHERINE ASHFORD

Everyone froze.

Alexander stared.

Kline stepped backward.

“She made me promise.”

Lena turned on him.

“Where is she?”

Kline ran toward the service door.

A shot sounded.

He fell.

Lena had fired a small weapon hidden inside her sleeve.

Vivian screamed.

Alexander moved toward Kline, but the doctor pushed the tablet across the floor.

A live message appeared.

CATHERINE ASHFORD HAS ACTIVATED EMERGENCY MATERNAL CONTROL.

The trust had not transferred to Halcyon.

It had transferred to Emma’s supposedly dead mother.

Kline whispered, “She has been waiting for Lena to expose the primary server.”

“Where?” Alexander demanded.

The doctor’s eyes moved toward the piano.

“Below.”

He lost consciousness.

A deep mechanical sound came from beneath the music-room floor.

The grand piano began descending on a hidden platform.

Alexander and Vivian stepped back.

A staircase appeared beneath it.

Cold white light rose from an underground chamber Catherine had never shown him.

Lena stared into the opening.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.

A woman’s voice came through the chamber speaker.

“Hello, Mother.”

Lena whispered, “Catherine.”

At the river, Emma reached the hidden boathouse with Thomas, Nora, Martin, and Mrs. Bell.

The door stood open.

A figure waited inside.

A tall woman in a dark raincoat stepped into the dim light.

Emma stared at her face.

She knew it from photographs beside her bed.

“Mommy?”

Catherine Ashford knelt.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

Emma ran toward her.

Nora caught the child before she reached the woman.

“Wait.”

Catherine’s expression changed.

“Nora?”

“You told me you were not ready to return.”

“I wasn’t. Lena forced the timeline.”

Emma struggled gently against Nora.

“That’s my mommy.”

Nora looked toward Catherine’s hands.

A silver biometric device circled her wrist—identical to Lena’s.

“Show me your left palm,” Nora said.

Catherine hesitated.

Thomas raised his weapon.

Catherine slowly opened her hand.

A black Halcyon symbol had been tattooed beneath her thumb.

Martin stared.

“That mark belongs to the Matriarch’s successor.”

Emma stopped moving.

Catherine looked at her daughter.

“I can explain.”

Behind them, the river team appeared at the entrance.

Catherine raised her wrist device.

Every guard lowered his weapon instantly.

She had not escaped Halcyon.
